In the United States, it is common for White and Black Americans to claim they are part Native American whether they really have Native ancestry or not. I was wondering if it's the same in Australia because they have a similar history to the US.

Because of so many Indigenous people here being raped by their "owners" and having children, there are people who look completely "white" but have Indigenous blood and therefore are considered Aboriginal.
Some people do claim ancestry they don't actually have but they wouldn't be accepted by any Aboriginal community just on that basis: there are 3 components to being accepted - Aboriginal ancestry; identifies as Aboriginal; is accepted as Aboriginal by an Aboriginal community.
As far as I know, people who falsely claim indigenous ancestry NEVER take on the oppression, only what they perceive as benefits. It used to happen a lot in hippy trippy newage circles and may still do for all I know: people claiming to "really" be Native American or Aboriginal from past lives or because they "felt" or dreamt they were, were but of course they were merely deluding themselves and using indigenous people for their own purposes.
It is like charli.m said, there are a lot of Indigneous people here who look "white" because of our history with the first landing where the white people came over and took their land from them as well as raping them and also wiping them out.
I lived in Far North Queensland for 6 years and there was a bigger majority of black people to white people and even now it wasn't uncommon to see 2 Indigenous parents with dark skin and their children would have varying shades of black from dark to honey coloured.
My strawberry-blond headed boyfriend has told me he's part black. I kinda hope he is.

Hahaha! I knew a guy like that once a long time ago. I kinda wanted to feel sorry for him, but he turned out to be an asshole. Half black, super tall, big feet, bubble butt, but small thang. He even owned a pump. Mwahahaha! He really did turn out to be an asshole though, I wonder if he was bitter about having such a little thang. Maybe his teeny peeny is what made him such a big asshole?
Funny thing was he told me he had a white half brother who was not so small. I didn't ask, he just told me that shit out of the blue

i was raised in australia and never knew anyone like that. i might be half aboriginal tho since i found out my dad isn't actually my real dad and based on what my mums told me, i'm getting a dna test to find out.
No, it's extremely abnormal to falsely accuse people of lying about their ancestry when you have absolutely no idea what their heritage is. It's extremely abnormal to believe that you can tell a person's full ethnic background just by the color of their skin.
This level of ignorance is not at all normal, in the US or Australia or anywhere else.

White people in the US claim to be native Americans. Cherokee usually. Truth is we don't know what blood we have in us. Unless we have a DNA test. I don't care!
