Do we need to eat meat?

Do you think we really need to eat meat? The texture is horrible and it looks so disgusting raw.

I think it's completely fine to EAT meat, however it is NOT fine with the way we OBTAIN our meat.

Slaughterhouses of all kinds are very unsanitary; most of the animals live their entire life knee-high in mud and shit. Cows are forced to eat corn, which is very unnatural food for a cow, and was actually the cause of E. coli. (http://www.johnrobbins.info/blog/grass-fed-beef/)

Chickens live in dark buildings that have only tiny slits on the walls to allow airflow rather than windows. They are never allowed outside to see the sunlight. They are given many growth hormones so that the chicken breast grows huge, so huge that most chickens can't even walk because their legs are too weak. Oh but don't worry, at least we will be able to purchase nice, large chicken breast...

...This is a picture of processed chicken, usually found in chicken nuggets and chicken patties:
    http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l9hc319GNU1qar86bo1_500.jpg
"Basically, the entire chicken is smashed and pressed through a sieve... bones, eyes, guts, and all... Because it’s crawling with bacteria, it will be soaked in ammonia. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be reflavored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color."

It is wrong that slaughterhouses treat the animals the way they do in order to supply our country with meat. Eating meat is okay, but we have to wake up and realize just what is going on before we take a bite into that hamburger or chicken nugget. We have to let the meat companies know it's NOT okay to treat our food this way. The only way we can do this is to support organic farmers and purchase their meat over the meat from the slaughterhouse.

I love meat, but I also love animals, and I can't stand eating most meat knowing it probably went through a horrible life, only to meet an even crueler death.

If you are interested about the way we get our food, you should watch the brilliant movie "Food Inc."
    Here's the trailer:

Honestly I don't think there is a 'right' or 'wrong' answer to this question. Some people do perfectly well on a Vegetarian diet and others..not so much.

It's all personal preference. You're the one that chooses how to live your life and what to eat though money can become an issue.

I do want to point out that not all 'meat' is obtained via slaughter houses and that not all animals are treated poorly. Free range chickens are do not live the same life and are not treated the same way. Buying from local ranches and a real butcher is a fair bit different. There are also still people who slaughter their own animals that they raise on their own ranch.

When it comes down to it this type of argument is usually more about animal "welfare" than about survival. No one seems to care about the destruction of plants and such though :p

I guess not. A friend of mine, his whole family is vegetarian. He's a big, tall guy. He's got some muscles, too. I suppose meat is not exactly necessary.

But I love fish. I don't think I'll be very happy without meat.

Bacon is the only food I hate. Cold sandwich ham is among the few foods I merely dislike.

I'll still eat either or both if I haven't eaten enough meat in a while.

Being vegetarian seems to me to be too much effort in order to intake either the same basic chemicals or an inadequate mix of Other chemicals compared to an ideal omnivorous diet.

    We need meat.

Sure we can get protein other ways, but that's like saying humans don't need sex because we were born with hands and imaginations.

A meat-substitute is just that. Something designed to mimic something else we clearly need.

    That analogy got slightly...
    Out of hand.

You can get fat and protein from foods other than meat (nuts for example, or soy protein).

there's plenty of ways to get protein besides meat. i've been a veggie for almost 2 years. even if you like meat, the imitation meat products are just as good. actually i think they taste better. :)

I agree, I'd copy a hermit as well as eat meat: eating meat/fish etc meats, and also figs, dates, nuts, lentils, barley, honey, non-wheat bread (rye is ideal), grapes, and having dairy, and also cooked plain rat/squirrel on a fire or on ashes, and no luxury foods. Wheat is the new meat: meat's not evil, wheat is evil, the raping of wheat, the grain of the rich, pulled out of its roots by a ripping machine called a combine harvester. It's not "meat is murder", it's "wheat is raped".

Surely I admit the way we treat animals is not the best one, but I cannot imagine my life without any kind of meat. I love tasty food, so I try to avoid thinking about poor animals. :(

  • You don't need meat, but if you don't, you'll need to eat vegetables in certain combinations to get complete proteins.

Yes we need to eat meat!, that's the reason we're omnivorous so we can get a balanced diet of meat, fruit and veg. i dont have problems for vegetarians but i do have a problem with vegans. you need protein and other stuff, you cant keep taking pills!

There's plenty of vegans who are healthier than plenty of meat eaters, just because you eat meat doesn't guarantee you're getting the proper nutrients.

Was a vegetarian for 13 years...not anymore though. Do we need it? no! We biologically aren't designed to be meat eaters...look at our teeth, now look at all the meat eating animals' teeth...we have teeth like cows, and horses, and goats...flat on top...herbavores PLUS meat can stay in your intestines for 2 weeks...ewh gross...I still eat it though...it's too hard being a vegetarian with a meat eating husband and kids...

      molars for crushing.

What? We do...our canines. Our aren't "as" pointy because we're apes, and we were orginally scavengers, not hunters. But we evolved to eat meat as much as veg.

Many people are able to get all the nutrients they need to stay healthy on a vegetarian diet but for me personally, I love meat. I also enjoy some of the vegetarian alternatives from time to time but I just could never commit to that sort of lifestyle full time.

Also, not only does pork LOOK like human flesh but it apparently tastes similar too. I read a story about some cannibal in Germany and he describe the taste of human flesh as similar to pork but slightly more bitter/tough. Gross but kind of interesting too.

We don't NEED it to live, but I'm not judging others who WANT to eat it. I mean, after they see how the meat gets to them, the process, etc, then I won't judge them if they still choose to eat it. I'm a veggie but I'm surrounded by meat-eaters. I respect them and don't let that fact that we have different diets get in the way of my life. While I would wish that they are more aware and tolerant about their food (because I care about them and don't want them to get sick), I have learned to accept that this is how our society sees eating meat. But NO, we do not NEED it. There are substitutes with just as much protein and nutrients. And quite frankly, the idea of eating a dead animal sickens me. Maybe to someone else, it doesn't, but for me, it's different.

I'll eat anything that had a good life free of suffering. My fiance is vegetarian and we live together, so most of my meat-eating is done at friend's and family's houses. Organic meat is expensive, but it tastes so much better than grocery-store meat.
It's a shame that animals are treated so poorly (especially pigs, which are smarter than dogs) just so that a profit can be made.
