Do we develop or are born with our gender? (bi, gay, straight)

It is hard for me to believe that there are people who actually "fall for" both sexes or even change gender in the course of their lives.

Gender & sexual orientation are two seperate things.

This poll is full of FAIL. Gender is not sexual orientation. And no, you are not born with a gender. You are born with a (usually) definite sex. But gender is a social construction that doesn't develop until you are socialized.

Yes people, we all see the mistake this person made. We don't need to be assholes because they misused a word. You still knew what they meant, didn't you?

"Sexually confused" should have been one of the choices.

  • I'm a female, and I only liked boys until I was 14, because the people around me taught me that you arn't "normal" if you like the same sex. But I was always curious about girls. Then when my friend told me her sister is a lesbian, I started to view things differently. Now I realise that I'm bisexual, and it doesn't matter if you grow up in a homophobic home or not. You are who you are, and if you discover it, that's great. I believe that you are born that way, but it's up to you to mature and figure out what that feeling is.

I think that one is born with an inclination toward one gender or another or both. I think the only way environment plays into sexual orientation is that one can choose to either display their homosexual/bisexual nature, or they can choose to hide it in order to avoid discrimination, harrassment, hate in general, etc.

Dude you are born with your gender! Either you're a male dude or a female dude! Gay or straight you're always a dude!

If you mean born gay or not, well that's a tough one. Honestly I think you have to be born a little gay to be gay!

I was once STRAIGHT now tie is how i feel...

I think we are all born bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender but it is up to us as a person to explore it and let it materialize. There's nothing wrong with who you are and u may say "im straight im straight im straight"and deny it but you know that's because of how society raised you and some where you have thought about another orientation.

Anyone who believes sexuality is determined after birth is a fucking idiot.
In the same way straight people don't choose to be straight, gay people don't choose to be gay, they are born that way. To say sexuality is a choice is as stupid as suggesting race is a choice.

Sexuality might be determined at least partially after birth and still not a choice.

I thought I was a lesbian... then I got a boyfriend. I've been with an FtM transgendered person before, too, so... eh. It doesn't matter what sex a person is or identifies with, I guess. As long as we both want a relationship, I'll go for it.

I think that we almost develop everything in life based on our feelings.
Example: if you have feelings for females and you are a male + you grow up where it was normal, you can call that being straight.

  • Yes, by "Gender" I mean "sexual orientation".
Consider that there isn't really much space here for the "sex. orientation thing" (Next time I'll ask a scholar).
For those who regard this a HUGE mistake thanks for not being retarded
(or being a psychic if that be the case) and being so tolerant and all.
I didn't realise that there would be people who would think that homosexuals, bi etc have different genitals than staight people.
    Sorry for being so misleading.

"Do we develop or are BORN with our GENDER?"

Unless you're born without genitals or X & Y chromosomal pairs then you're born with a gender.

(yes i'm answering the title question not the explanation)

OP, gender is different from sexuality and sex.

I am a man, my sex is male, my gender is male, my sexual orientation is between 80 and 90% straight.

I think sexuality can fluctuate to a degree, depending on your environment, the people you're surrounded by, your own sexual 'needs' etc. But I don't believe everybody is capable of the 'sexual mobility' bisexuals and pansexuals are. I don't think I could ever fall in love with someone of the same sex.

I could bum a guy, but then I could kill a guy, doesn't mean I want to do either (I would rather bum a guy than kill a guy... Though it depends on the guy).

I've known I think deep down that i've been Bi my whole life. I've always leaned more to women then with men though when it came to the actual physical means of relationships.

Actually the human brain is different between male and female so this could take place during gene sex selection before birth. Hence a male could be born with a feminine brain and vise versa.

I've witnessed all, some ppl say your born that way, i have other who have told me they have chosen..i think it all depends on the person. For example the ones who have suffered sexual abuse...they find themselves in the perdicament(spelt wrong) of being confused about sexuality. therefore, they choose what makes them happy. you have the people who are just born that way..you cant really explain it you just know....which has been linked to trans genders.

I think its something your born with. For me, there was no influence at all to be attracted to females, but I was. Males also of course, I really didn't even know it was an option to like the same sex, yet I did. I realized when I was about ten or eleven that I thought girls were cute as well as boys. I never acted on anything with a female til I was well into my teens, but I would have sooner had I been presented the chance. So, ya, I'm bi, and think that's how I was born, yet chose to be in a relationship with a man that happend to work out well and now I'm married. If anything drastic were to happen, I'd hop in the sack with a woman, no doubt

I did not write this post but Actually for all of you smarty pants, When you want to join the military they ask for your sex and gender. Sex being whether you were born male or female. and Gender being whether you act like a girl or a boy. basically asking if you're gay

    • disthing

Acting like a girl or a boy isn't the same as being straight, homosexual, between or neither. An a-sexual person can still have a male or female gender. A gay guy can act in a stereotypically masculine way and identify as male, but still sexually prefer men. Blah blah.

Your military probably use that question because they can assume sexuality based on conflicting answers (a guy identifying as a girl) and avoid the controversy of directly asking sexual orientation, but you'll have plenty of guys answering gender with "male" who are gay, and plenty of girls answering gender with "female" who are gay.

Or maybe they just ask it to know whether to say Mr or Miss? :P

regardless of what people here think, it is pretty much proven in my field of study, psychology, that sexual preference is developed.

gender however is something you are born with since gender is physical. gender is a term that refers to your genitalia not your sexual preference.

Actually gender isn't physical, sex is physical. Gender is who you are on the inside. A person whose sex is male can identify as a woman and a person whose sex is female can identify as a man.
