Do these people exist? is it normal that i haven't seen any, ever?

Do non-patriotic Americans exist? Because most of them create this image in my head of gullible, simplehearted, flag-waving, belligerent warmongers, who are only interested in their own country's success - and yet think of themselves as the greatest, most obliging country on Earth.

Any other place, you can see people who strongly disagree with most of its own country's decisions immediately. In the US, I find them hard to see. So are there any non-patriotic Americans? Because I'd like to send you guys a bottle of champagne and possibly a cookie.

ps.: No, I do not hate America. I cannot hate a country or an entire nation. It's just an observation of mine.

  • I am loyal to my country, but not the people running it. It's what I imagine a crew member of ship would feel like if the captain turned out to be an incompetent fool, steering the ship straight into a sandbar.

  • Personally, I don't see what's at all wrong with loving your country, whatever country that may be, and standing up for its ideals, admiring its history and culture, or the principles that its supposed to stand on. That's all a part of what makes us who we are.

Every one has a dark side. It's our job to expose that and make it right.

I think that most American's are patriotic not because they agree with everything that's going on with the government or economy but because of the appriciation they have for why our country was founded and all the freedom we have. That's what makes us a great nation and hopefully projects to other nations and inspires them to believe in their country too. The American flag, national anthem, and other traditions all are based on those things and I think it's pretty amazing

A nation founded on slavery and genocide by genocidal slavers. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves and wrote letters of his intentions to exterminate American Indians. A constitution written with specific instructions that slavery be protected until a certain date.

Now modern Americans don't need to be ashamed of a history they didn't personally live in, they bear no fault for that, but to glorify it? That is indeed shameful to humanity itself and our progress from those terrible days.

Also what freedom are you talking about? The NSA has read your message and will read mine. Hell if I lived in the US I'd be scared to write what I wrote even though I hold no particular ill will towards the country. Some freedom, the freedom only to agree perhaps...

You sound more patriotic than I am, but you raise an excellent point. I think the values this country was founded on, the Bill of Rights and so forth are great. I just think recent leaders have been doing a lousy job of upholding them.

We are (still) a free country compared to many and there are aspects worth being proud of. On the other hand, certain policies like the war on drugs and the war on terror are pretty much a blight on the face of the earth.

The US government encourages that attitude through propaganda distributed among its citizens so that those with strong disagreements with the state feel isolated and don't speak out.

Um... if that is true it surely isn't working very well.

Americans are in fact OVERLY CRITICAL of their government. Many believe that it cannot be trusted, and virtually anything it does is questioned as if it were part of some outrageous plot to crush the citizens with its power.

      • It's only recently been not "working very well" because your guy threw his mouthpiece, specifically the Associated Press, under the bus...demanding that they give up their sources, and he used Bush's law to tap their phone lines. When A.P. learned that...their cuddly little relationship turned sour.

Absolute trust in the people we give power to, especially those who overreach as much as Obama or Bush have, is foolhardy. It's exactly what Germany did back in the '30s.

...funny how Merkel even made that point.

I live in Europe and I deal with resident Americans. They don't have in mind ever to go back.
When they talk about their home land is a bit strange. Not one thing good to be said about.

  • I was actually just asking, because I'm allergic to patriotism in any way, shape or form. I don't understand, nor do I wanna know, how you can be proud of/identify yourself with something you didn't do, something you can't even help.

You're proud to be Japanese/Russian/American/Whateverian? Why is that, exactly? Not like being born from certain parents in a certain place is an accomplishment. It's actually just luck. Or the lack thereof, depending on the perspective.

OP, I really question your perspective on this matter. As someone who lives in the US, I would say that the people who are angry with the government make themselves visible REAL FAST.

Close to 50% of the country not only disagrees with President Obama, but outright hates him and continue to flood blogs and message boards about how he is a socialist hell-bent on destroying America. The irony is that those people also see themselves as the "real patriots" as if the President is something alien and un-American.

I know that's probably hard to understand for someone who does not live here.

Don't know about patriotic but I have interacted with most of such people who think they are superior to the rest of the world and that they are most powerful just because they live in America. Although it is obvious that these people haven't really contributed to what America is now. they hate all those who are not actually Americans but living there and consider them to be the culprits for any kind of recession their state faces and other different problems.
do you count this in patriotism as well?

    • I don't see the term 'patriot' as an objective one, but rather a subjective one.
So, if these people you describe call themselves 'patriots', then that's what they are, in my book.

I do not hate America, I hate what it has become. Being a really old guy, I remember when this was indeed the greatest country on earth, when we had men like JFK in the White House and you actually voted for a candidate, not the lesser of two evils.
I could go on, but I think I've answered your question, because I am one very unpatriotic son of a bitch.

I see what everyone is saying and I agree with you too in a way. But even if Americans seem over patriotic to other countries is it really a bad thing? It brings people together who have similar beliefs. Other countries have had bad times too and not everyone is perfect including governments. Appriciating all the Good things in ANY country is important because if we don't think of those things and how things should be then how is anyone going to want to try and make a change? America gives people the chance to make changes and if MORE people really thought about what patriotic ment and had the motivation to actually study in depth what is happening then they find out what's wrong and can put more thought into who was running for office.

To the end of disillusioning themselves into believing they are really Asian, abandoning whatever country they are from, and saying stuff like they wish there country would be destroyed and how much they hate living in that country.

Kissing up to anyone who really is Asian which is something they could never be. This kind of scum is truly pathetic. Being a bitch to another race is kind of sad. No self respect at all.

Apparently they have the opposite on japans end that want to pretend they are from another country and do the same stupid shit.
