I like the Recent Posts feature where the polls and stories are in one list but I find some things irritating.

haha I've just noticed the numbers missing!! That's a good idea - stops the arrogance against newbies.
Actually apart from the physical layout I think management are doing a better job filtering out the crap repetitive stories than ever before. Quality not quantity seems to be the new order - and I like that.
it confuses me too but i think it is because we were used to see it categorized and the sudden change was not acceptable. rest no issues
