Do people actually care about charities

You see people all the time who have dedicated their life to or undertaken a massive project to raise money for a charity or who are doing unpaid volunteer work and I can’t help but think that they don’t actually give a shit about the charity or the people they are ‘helping.’

For example, I saw a woman on the news who is nominated for a Pride of Britain award because of her lifelong work with a charity for premature babies. I feel like you just wouldn’t bother and she (and all others) are just in it for the awards/public appreciation.

I get that it’s a nice thing to do but surely they can not care that much and would not do something like that with nothing in it for them. Do other people actually care about charities and ‘people in need’ like that? Or does everyone else think they are just doing it to look good in public as well?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I'd say it'd take an insane amount of work (and even then still a lot of luck) to get an award for charity work, it wouldn't be worth it for people who only care about recognition. They'd have to genuinely enjoy what they do and feel so rewarded for it to ever stand a chance of getting an award.

It is hard to know what motivates some people to do the things they do. Some people are truly selfless. And for all the people who do it only for the accolades, there are just as many anonymous givers out there sitting quietly on the sidelines. This is how most nurses and school teachers operate.

I can't get past the fact that a lot of these people claim they support children and the young, yet they're all for abortions.

I once encountered a group that was protesting abortion clinics by giving out erasers shaped like fetuses. I said, "Cool! Abortion clinics offer fetus erasers too!"

They didn't like that, but I did.

This kind of thinking is bound to die off in a couple of generations. Enjoy it whilst it lasts.

A fetus is a person. You were a fetus, once.

The fact that it's a person was the point.

There are those who donate money and time for the purpose of getting some sort of recognition/reward out of it. These people however are often easy to spot as they only go out of their way to do good deeds when they know others are watching. I've seen people that've dedicated both small and major portions of their lives to helping others that are just as kind behind the scenes when they think they're alone as they are when they're posing for pictures to be put in stuff like the newspaper.

The real problem with charities is they're often owned/funded by large business's as they can then avoid having to pay taxes. In certain countries business's that donate or fund charities or fundraisers are exempt from paying at the end of the tax year. It's a corrupt and unfair loophole in the system that allows major business's to get out of having to pay MORE than they'd otherwise have to. You will however find good people working amongst the corruption if you spend enough time around them :) .
