it seems to me that quite a few guys will assume or eventually reason to themselves that a single female is a lesbian when she doesn't return their advances. is this a common, but ignorant assumption on their part?
Strangely enough it is the same conclusion many women will come to when they find a man is not attracted to them. Probably just a defence machanism on both accounts.
Male pride coming into play. If they are rebuffed then it couldn't possibly be because she doesn't find them attractive, now could it? Nope, she must either be gay, frigid, or part of a cult. Or all three.
What dappled said. It's how some people cope with rejection. They probably don't actually think that of you, but they tell themselves this because they don't want to accept that they might be undesirable.
If they actually believe it though, then they're just morons. Don't take it personal, either way.

This is how some men think about this.
Men in general are egotistical. So they are going to always blame everyone else when they fuck up. If she says "Im gay" she is playing hard to get as she would never NOT be interested in someone. If she says no "She must be gay or a total bitch". There is all sort of rationalizations that a man will put up to get past the fact a woman said "NO". Its really delusional but it happens a lot.
My mum actually said the opposite about a guy who didn't receive her advances! I'm agreeing with above poster, it's an excuse to give to others or yourself to try and keep your pride intact. Women normally have far stronger pride, and don't need that crap! =)
I'm a guy, and while I've never thought this, I think that they SAY it so people don't think that it's their own fault they couldn't get you; basically they say it to others but know it's not true
