Do girls sometimes like guys without them doing anything?

So I'm a guy and I've sort of talked myself into thinking that in order to get a girl (or guy) to like me I have to do my best at expressing myself to her/him and making myself attractive to her/him. The reason I think this way is because I never have been in a relationship and as far as I know no one at my school is attracted to me or has been.
Even so, there are times when I hear about a girl becoming attracted to a guy out of the blue, and it just feels unrealistic to me. Do I have any basis in my thoughts, or have I just let myself believe that my circumstances are always true? Sorry if this is too long-winded or confusing.

    There's no pressure! Just be yourself, I like a guy who is honest,smart, funny, and happy being exactly who he is.

    You don't have to be flashy and make yourself seem more attractive or likable. You don't have to impress anyone, so don't. Just make yourself happy and when something comes your way, enjoy it.

    Yes, that's usually how I do. but I can't give advice, because I've never had a BF. I've had people come on to me, and that annoys me because most of the time we have nothing in common so I have no idea what they even want to do with me (but i can guess). anyway, that might seem hypocritical. I don't exactly become attracted to the guy out of the blue as you say. I sort of "admire them from afar", and it may come as a surprise that i would like them when they are not even flirting with me. but that's just it, they are being themselves, not some fake good person that's trying to win a girl how they imagine the girl to be. Sorry if that doesn't make sense but i tried lol.
