Disliking songs i've written

When I first come up with the idea, I'll be quite pleased with it. Then, after listening to it with fresh ears, I start to dislike it. Is this normal? It's so frustrating!

Do this, dont critizize yourself, wait a little, I had the fucking same thing. Now I feel like I'm Kurt Cobain's(RIP dude, u deserve it) brother.

It's hard to make art and like it. I feel that way about pastries; I'll put in all the best ingredients and make them exactly to my liking. I'll get unsolicited compliments from friends and those they've shared it with (my brother and sister once cleared out 2 batches of cookies that should've been Christmas gifts while I was driving them over). But when I try them, they taste "perfect," but not good. Just ho hum. I can tell you with music, poetry, and literature the best thing you can do is let the art sit for a bit, and the revisit it later (less effective with brownies).

Haha nice advice and it rings very true. Especially about the brownies. They are made to be eaten right away :P

We are our own worst critics.

"We are our own worst critics" That quote fits so well. Try getting a stranger's opinion, or a friend who doesn't know you wrote it

It's soo tempting, but don't scrap your songs. I wrote a song once, memorized it, recorded it and decided it sucked so much that I totally forgot it existed. A few years later I dug up the tape and popped it in the player, and I was like HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE BEST SONG I'VE EVER WRITTEN...but I had forgotten the chords and never wrote any of it down. It was gone.

yeahhh this totally happens to me too!

i dont write lyrics just music but i'll start out with something and think, ''yeah that sounds pretty good'' then once i finish the song, i completely hate it. and it sucks because sometimes my songs are assignments for school and i end up handing in something i hate :(

maybe you just get bored of the way it sounds? since you wrote it you've heard it in your head a number of times i'm sure. thats my problem sometimes. anyways, maybe it would help if you showed your work to someone who will give you a completely honest opinion? hope i've helped and good luck with the song writing!

      Thanks :)

I've decided to just do whatever and not give a crap anymore. Just to do what I'm happy with at the time. I mean, it is a product of that moment and once it's over, it's over. I'll have changed as a person and perhaps become better at songwriting.

Most people's style of music changes throughout their life, right? It's all in the process.

Yeah, I do get bored of the way it sounds xD Can't be helped after 454353543643643 plays.

Good luck with yours too :)

Maybe one day I'll find some musicians. For now, I record every now and then (I'm a bit too lazy to do proper recordings at the moment hehe) and let some people listen to my ideas to see what they think of them. I guess I've still got a lot to learn. Writing crappy songs isn't a waste of time since it's all part of the growth.

And yeah, we really are our worst critics. That's meant to be my line :) Thanks, but my songs really aren't that great...argh doesn't sound very convincing coming from me now, does it?

very normal,I wrote a few songs these past days that at first felt and sounded good to me but as soon as I was done feeling the music I began critiquing the music and ended up scrapping it all. Try playing the music to other people to see what they think of it to get some idea of what you can do with it. try finding some musicians you bounce ideas off of and get some good feedback
