Disliking anime because of the slow/choppy animation

Is it normal that I can't stand to watch any anime simply because the slow/choppy animation annoys me too much? I would be interested in watching some anime movies considered masterpieces but I can't get over that animation style. To me it looks like it's maybe only 10 fps or so, and that lack of fluidity really gets on my nerves.

Am I alone in this? Is this normal?

  • Not all anime is like that, I actually find a lot of anime to be fluid and stylish.

Depends on what you were watching and probably how long ago it was made.

It's an acquired taste, and like all things involving preference not for everyone. I've heard that anime is dull and not lifelike enough, but if you just look at it as art that's meant to represent the idea of what it's portraying (like all cartoons) then it's easier to get into it.

Personally, the story is the most important part for me, but again that's preference, and if you're having a hard time getting past the animation, then you probably will have a tough time getting into the story. Still, I'd recommend Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Black Lagoon and Monster (Though they all have that same fluidity issue). There is also Princess Mononoke, which was the first anime that I knowingly watched and enjoyed (I remember parts of it being almost hyper-fluid, although that was years ago at this point, and memory does funny things)

It makes me laugh so hard when anime TV shows have one character moving on a still background (looks especially bad with crowd scenes), or when people walk, and they look like dolls because their faces don't have any moment. It doesn't affect my enjoyment, but I do notice that it looks cheap.

Have you ever seen Akira? It blows away most Western animation. The characters are stylized, but they don't have the dopey big-eyes look.

I don't watch all anime, maybe you're referring to older anime (eg. during the 90's) so their animation were slow, but the newer anime is not like this anymore... But to each is their own, so this is truly normal... I don't mind slow or choppy animation, as long as I still enjoy the anime / cartoon / story...
