Department store music almost killed me and cost me my job

I had a retail job at a department store, but I quit because the music they played during the day was making me depressed. It was the same, continuous mix of the cheesiest, sappiest 80's and 90's music. After work, it played on a loop in my head until I started drinking heavily. I told a co-worker I was going to kill myself if I had to hear Phil Collins one more time. Apparently she went to human resources because I had to have an emergency meeting with my manager and she made me see a psychologist in the end.

I said I can't work under these conditions and it is impacting my mental health. My manager was not allowed to fire me in case something happened, so I decided to quit, but I still want a decent reference because I was a good worker.

Now I don't have a job, but my self esteem and mood has improved otherwise. Did I make a mistake?

You may have no job, but at least you have your sanity! Yeah, it's a little bit extreme to be honest. It would have been better to have something else lined up. But that doesn't mean it was a mistake.
You'll most likely find something else that suits you better.

I used to have the same problem and it's fucking horrible, I know. You either go with the music or fight against it - both are just different types of madness. One is just more brain dead and subdued...
Anyway, focus on what you're going to do now.

I like Phil Collins, imagine if they just played the Smith's haha ( great band)

Sounds like she way over reacted, does she call the rspca if she hears someone say they could eat a horse or phone the police if someone says they could murder a pint

If you can't find another job, you definitely made a mistake. Being an adult does require being able to do things under adverse conditions, though music which you should be able to tune out, isn't very adverse.
I certainly hope that this is as tough as life gets for you, but I have a feeling it won't be. Sorry, but you need to get a bit tougher to survive in the real world.

  • My work plays the most god awful music on repeat but eventually I tuned it out. I don't even hear it anymore and think it's not normal it had an effect on you.

Ah man, I remember workin at Toys R Us and every time a Justin Biebs song came on, my manager, where ever he was in the store, could be heard shouting "GOD NOOOOOOOOO".

My boy toy loves country and the shit is so depressing. I can only handle it for an hour at a time before I HAVE to shut it off because I will be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. It will even kill my mood during sex. Music can have a hell of an effect on your mood.

You started heavily drinking because of music?

haha this story made me laugh.

But this is how I feel about modern pop music. I've worked jobs in the past where I've been exposed to endless hours of this music and it has driven me crazy. So I voted normal.

Hmm. Sounds like Chapters/Indigo. The music does suck.

I don`t like piped music in stores, so I carry my own music wherever I go on my smartphone so i don`t have to listen to the crap coming out of store speakers.

Hearing music on repeat does that to me too, I can't get it out of my head and it's terrible.

Firstly let me just say that I'm sorry for this, it's a horrible song and I'm a bad person for getting this in your head but I've tried everything to get it out of mine and nothing has worked, I'm hoping passing it on to you will finally let me be in peace,
