Daniel tosh's rape joke?

Everyone's been blowing up over the Tosh Rape joke so I brought it here.

So here's the situation an audience member told Tosh that rape jokes weren't funny so he pointed to her and said “Wouldn’t it be funny if that girl got raped by, like, five guys right now? Like right now?” There your have it that's joke that everyone's going crazy over.

Days later in his defense Tosh said "there are awful things in the world but you can still make jokes about them."

Comedians have made and defended rape jokes for years. Yes, people make jokes about terrible things but they actually put the effort into putting comedy around it. But what Tosh said wasn't even a joke. When the audience member said rape wasn't funny, Tosh didn't respond on stage with "I understand rape isn't funny, comedians make jokes about terrible things but we still understand they're terrible" he said something along the lines of "Maybe you should get raped." I laugh at Quagmire on Family Guy. But I think Tosh is a dick for even comparing what he said to actual comedy. I feel bad for the girl, I wouldn't heckle a comedian on stage, but I don't think it would be funny if 5 guys raped her.

The problem is, it just isn't funny. If it was funny, we could appreciate his skill as a comedian (while not endorsing the message if seen literally. Although, to be honest, if you're sitting in an audience in front of a comedian, that's a pretty big clue that what is being said is meant as a joke and isn't necessarily to be viewed literally).

The biggest problem I have with it is that it isn't funny. The joke is acceptable (it's a joke, just not a good one). Probably the worst thing from Daniel Tosh's point of view is that he's getting publicity for being unfunny (quite the opposite of what any comedian wants).

Even if it had been funny to some people, though, 1 out of 6 women is a survivor of sexual assault, and it would be really triggering to those people.

True. Normally I'd say that a joke is independent of the audience and that there'd be no jokes if every single member of the audience had to be consulted (i.e. you can't tell jokes about politicians in case one of the audience's cousins is a politician) but rape isn't a laughing matter. It bothers me when people use it as a joke word here or in computer games I play.

Lol yeah. I laugh at some rape jokes - because they're funny. Just like I laugh at some 9/11 jokes as well as some racist jokes - BUT THEY ARE FUNNY.

As everyone else had said the ONLY problem with this joke is that it just wasn't funny. Now a REAL joke? Ha. Women's rights.

I agree with dappled- yes, there is such a thing as dark comedy, and it's valid. But that joke wasn't funny, it was just plain wrong. There was no comedic value at all. It was simply a dick move.

So in my opinion, it was unacceptable.

It's Tosh, it's so typical. It's more shocking that someone would be surprised by such a joke coming from him than the actual joke itself.

Anyway, I think his 15 minutes were up a while ago, he's a one-note wonder.

    • I'm not that familiar with Tosh. But I don't think "Oh that's just Tosh being Tosh" is a good excuse.

I hate Tosh and I wish someone would push him off a building.

However, If she watches Tosh.0, she'd know that he jokes about that stuff, man. Whyd she even go if she thought rape jokes werent funny? She took his joke too seriously.

John Tosh himself would not be laughing if at a later time someone pointed to his very own daughter and say it would be funny if five guys raped her. He would not be laughing at all.

Tosh might be attempting to use vulgarity (which requires no talent or skill) to be a "successful" comedian

Oh by the way, user "ITDUZ" if youre reading this, and predictably so, dont waste your time to begin your usual rant about females that goes a little something like this "females need to stop playing victims..blah blah"

The issue here is rape. male or female. Rape is a serious, traumatic, shameful act that permanently scars someone for the rest of their lives, nothing "comical" about that.

    No argument otherwise.

I don't know who this 'Tosh' is but that joke was rubbish.

I do agree you can make a joke out of anything but this example wasn't funny. At all.

I laugh at pretty dark, twisted comedy. It's the whole "that's so wrong, it shouldn't be funny but it is" thing. We laugh at something because of the shock value.

I had no idea who this Tosh guy is, and from your description, I won't be looking him up. That's not a joke in any way, shape or form. It's not funny, it's not clever. It's just him being a dick.

I voted unacceptable, even though it's not a joke. It's a heckle come back, but any comedian worth the title would actually have said something smart and funny, or acknowledged that the heckler was right and moved on.
