Curiosity,i read in the bible that it's unclean to.....

Okay,so I recently read in the bible (old testament) that it's "unclean" to have sex when you're on your period. It said something along the lines of "men, do not approach a woman to have sex when she's on her period for it is unclean" something like that. What exactly does that mean? Is it against god to have sex on ur period? Is that just old testament? Also...is it against god to have anal sex between man and wife as well? Please help. I am a christian and I'm curious about this.i'd really appreciate religious and serious answers please! Thanks:-)

perfectly okay to do: 15
against god: 3
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Back in the old day they used that passage to justify banishing women to the woods when they had their period. Supposedly they couldn't come into contact (even speaking) with any men becuase during that period of time they were "unclean".

Soooo I wouldn't trust it too much. One important thing to remember with Christianity is a lot of those old laws were written when people had a limited undestanding of sciences and things like that.

Like why the Bible says homosexuality is wrong... Jews in ancient times believed men only had a limited number of sperm. Therefore sodomy was wrong because it was seen as wasting seed rather than populating the earth, which is what they thought was most important.

The problem with today's people is that they look at this all the wrong way. They look at this and say "OMG how horrible! These women were treated like shit!"

But if anything, the Jewish religion has a strong background of women's rights.

Look at the "unclean" period. For one week a woman doesn't have to cook, clean, or do any chores. She doesn't have to put up with any demands from men. Pretty much it's a vacation while she's cramping and bleeding.

Same with childbirth. The woman gets a vacation from work and chores and gets time to relax.

And more examples of women's rights:
Women had the legal / religious right to refuse their husbands in bed. So a woman could say "no". And... they also had the right to DEMAND their husbands and demand pleasure.

Perhaps it's time we stopped judging this by our own "feminist" standards. Sometimes the knee-jerk reaction is the wrong one

The first point you made, that.... that is wrong on so many levels. Its like calling the segregated seating for African Americans on buses in the US decades ago "Premium Seating". No, just no.

i know you're trying to make it sound sensational like it was o so horrible 2000 years ago but....

there's no comparing "back of the bus" seating with "you don't have to work when you're on your period"

Before you make comparisons perhaps you should actually learn about the culture you're looking down upon first.

I've read this too and yes we are not supposed to have sex when we are on our period.

Anal sex. There is nothing precise about it in the Bible. It's up to your conscience.

No, it depends onthe interpretation you make of the scriptures. Some christians have used some passage of the Bible to justify it -<BR><BR>Lamentations 2:10 reads, " The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground and keep silence; they throw dust on their heads and gird themselves with sackcloth. THE VIRGINS OF JERUSALEM BOW THEIR HEADS TO THE GROUND."<BR><BR>while others have used other passages to prove that it is a sin. Like this passage where it is said that our body is a temple etc... Just to say that it really depends on how you interpret it.

And this is the problem with a book that was written over a protracted period of time by many different people. Too many contradictions. One person can use the bible to justify their position, and another can use it to discredit that position. Just ignore the whole thing entirely and you will have a better, happier life. Trust me, I do, because I'm an atheist. When I was religious, upto the age of 14-15, I was miserable. Now I am happier than I have ever been.

I have never been miserable in my whole life. There were times when I was sad but never miserable. Your life is different from mine and I'm happy that you're happy now. My life is a beautiful one, trust me:)

I've never met a single person who follows everything in the Bible. Even the Pope doesn't.

I choose to be religious because I know its right (I won't be debating it) I'm just curious to find the biblical standpoint on it.

This part of the bible was written by old, sexually repressed men nearly 2000 years ago who knew nothing about sex or female anatomy, not at the level we do now. The bible can be safely ignored in today's society, it is antiquated & irrelevant and is damaging to psychological and sexual development.

While I understand that you were probably brought up in a christian household, and you continue to choose to be religious, despite all the recent events and evidence that causes the majority of young people to reject religion, I cannot sugar-coat this one.

I honestly cannot understand how any intelligent person can read the entire bible and not put it down an atheist. It is a sick, disgusting how-to-guide for how to treat other human beings like savages. It is made irrelevant by modern ethics.

    Also, all praise the FSM!

I'm with you, Angel. Messy fuck, but so what. They didn't have latex condoms back when Moses was in charge. Much of Old Testament Jewish law compensates for lack of 21st century hygiene.

and if you have any STDs it can give you a better chance (if you want to call it "better") to infect your partner.
