Cousin calls native american niece racist for pocahontas costume

So I'm mostly white, but my sister I have Native American ancestry through our great grandma who died tragically. Obviously, it's a sensitive topic for us. On top of that, my sister married a man who is at least 75% Native American. Their daughter, my niece, is very obviously not fully white (not that it really matters). My grandpa has a cousin who is that older typical hippie lady, which aren't uncommon in my family anyway. However, last Halloween she sent my sister various nasty messages calling us racist and calling my sister vulgar names for letting my niece dress like Pocahontas. Mind you, our cousin is white as snow.

Some people like to make an addiction out of being offended.

The whole concept of “appropriation” is such a shame to me. I love being able to see and experience other cultures, it’s one of the best parts about diversity. It’s really sad seeing folks say “you can’t do this because you’re not *whatever*”

My wife is full blood Chinese and lived in China her entire life, she’s always ecstatic when any white guy/gal wants to hear about China, try Chinese food, celebrate a Chinese holiday with her, or wear any form of traditional clothing. And hell if anyone wants to upload their car crash dash-cam video to YouTube I’m not going to claim they are stealing from us Russians.

The time I understand when it’s impolite or offensive is if someone sexualizes/disrespects a ceremonial garment or wears something to purposely mock a culture.

But the Native Americans have some kickass headwear and outfits, makes sense why kids would think it’s cool and want to mimic it.

    Cultural appropriation isn’t racist.

Racism is the opposite, it’s hating that culture so much that she’d refuse to wear the costume.

  • That's because there is a popular culture right now that validates the most horrid little shits while they get to pretend they're good people for it.

"What? I'm not an unlikeable cunt the world would be better off without! I'm progressive!"

Cultural appropriation is the double standard that white people can look or wear anything, but those of said cultures can't.

It's trendy for white girls to get henna tattoos, but indian girls are subjected to coving it up when they go to work, ect...

That woman's a cunt. She's full of hate but doesn't want to admit it, so instead of just acting like the total bitch she wants to be, she lies to herself that she's angry about social issues.

  • Pocahontas was better than the little mermaid and pretty close with Mulan

But that family member is a snowflake who either can't handle things she doesn't already agree with or looks for opportunities to have opinions to be vocal about

If she really was worried about cultural appropriation or black face/Jim crow type things, I feel like the thought would cross her mind that it's a little girl in a Disney princess costume

I do hope though she went went with Pocahontas because she's a bad ass, not just because of a loose genetic similarity

    • It was her Mom's favorite princess when she was a kid.

I just found it ironic, given that we ARE native at least somewhat and my niece definitely is, and I had my whitest relative ever go off about it lol.

      • She doesn't sound very fun to be around. Maybe not invite her to Thanksgiving or something "sorry Karen we're still a little worried covid-19 and other toxic things"

    • Lol it's a mistype. I originally put he was half but then I remembered his dad was actually half as well. I mainly only knew his mom, who is actually part Japanese too, so I'll have to ask my BIL what he is, he's definitely a mixed bag, but mostly Aleutian.

What if a black girl wanted to dress like snow white? That's not racist because it's not about skin color. Your cousin needs help

Kid dresses up as beloved character from classic kid movie for Halloween. Big fucking deal. Your cousin must not have much going on with her life if she was even remotely interested in this piece of informartion, nevermind her actually finding the energy to get offended about it.
