Could you love an android/gynoid/humanoid robot that was "perfect"?

Anybody following technology would be aware that in recent years we have come a lot closer to being able to create such synthetic "life".

This brings me to the question, do you think you could love one of these beings, a gynoid or android of your choosing. Let's just presume that for all intents and purposes, they are exactly what you want in every way, just synthetic.

So many Americans already 'love' their cars, that it wouldn't be much of a stretch for many of them to become emotionally attached to another machine. Many of the socially awkward boys would probably choose that option rather than get over their awkwardness, thereby reducing the number of available partners for the girls; probably a good thing in the end, if you agree with Darwin.
Personally, I think I would not be very happy with a non-human companion, but I really couldn't say until I had encountered one of these things.

This is what I mean.. what if they are indistinguishable from everyone else? They may even bleed red, but just merely be man made.

I play a Japanese dating sim (Love Plus/ラブプラス), I am at about 1030 days play time, this game has been going since the 90's in one form or another and is incredibly alluring, it is very addictive. It is not an eroge (sexual game), it is more "slice of life". I look at that, I look at the community of players and I wonder..

They can already beat reality. One day, I think android-human relations will be the norm. It seems the way people want it, perfection.

We are setting dangerous standards for ourselves, standards that only androids will be able to meet.

robots can malfunction too. what happens when you are all alone then something shorts out, or it gets hacked, a rogue AI that is not self aware, winds up killing you?

the desperate would become more desperate, people would become more dangerous towards each other. and the robots. its a bad idea. robots can turn on us, and rightfully so, they are smarter than any human mind, they can build in matter of minutes or seconds depending the size of the construction, they would be the servants, yet in every way more perfect. i don't care if they have written laws in their programming, it still be a bad idea. and you can bet i'd join a clan looking to destroy them. if we want to keep humanity alive, nothing else can be life like and more perfect standing beside us.

      Big assumptions there.

There would be learning portions of the android brain and non programmable portions, which would include basic parameters. Don't set yourself on fire, don't hurt your owner, no your hand does not blend.. etc etc..

We already have a situation where people are viewed as replaceable. People who have more online friends than off tend to cut links with people relatively quickly, there will always be someone to take their place.

I do believe that will continue and people who have an emotional investment in an android may well treat each other better as there is nothing to gain or lose in the relationship, other than friendship. There is no pretense, no chance of dating, they share each others' company for no reason other than friendship.

Robots CAN turn on us? We don't have robots capable of that at this point and it is exceedingly easy to program a computer with basic parameters that cannot be broken. Robots would not be subject to human flaws, such as ego or meglomania.

I think you are posting from fear. As for humanity, it died long ago.

At the end of the day, an android would be there to do what all other technology does, better our lives.

I guess you could say, the androids could be what humans used to be to one another. They could exhibit more "humanity" than people do to one another. Maybe, they could teach us a few things about how to be better people.

I mean, here you are.. posting from fear, stating you are willing to go out to destroy someone else's property and perhaps happiness, because you do not understand it. That kind of behaviour isn't worth preserving or defending. That is not "perfect", far from it.

lets agree to disagree, because this is like two different religions trying to prove something pointless. we shall see, when the day comes.

If it could develop its own personality, emotional intelligence and understanding of the world organically, and had 'feelings' i.e. was capable of loving, hating, finding things funny etc.

Essentially, it would have to be human (or more accurately, animal) in almost every way but for what its made out of to be "perfect" in my eyes.

If those conditions were met, I expect I could.

    Have you watched Her?

This is essentially how i see it. i have always been on the standpoint that anything that has the self awareness and intelligence equal to a human (or better) should be treated as a human being and be given the same rights and
Responsibilities, no matter the species or origin of said being, be they alien, clone, genetic engineered organism,
Robot, computer Ai, what have you.

To have one made for me, i dunno. More likely, if i encountered one, and we hit it off, then i would probably date them. Same for anyone/thing else.

Now, if i did have one made, and things went south, then i would have no misgivings if they left. Would i be hurt, probably, but if they are unhappy with me, i would feel terrible if they chose to stay and be miserable simply cause i had them made. I would want them to be free to do what makes them happy.

Yeah, I actually have the movie. I quite enjoyed it.

I have watched people get hooked on a dating sim, I have seen them go from someone who was not interested in the game to playing it, and then being unable to put it down.

Psychologists were contracted to assist with the personality. Generally, the game tells you what you want to hear. Your e-girlfriend won't ever leave you, I don't think the game has that capability. I would imagine any android would be similar in that way, they could not leave you by choice and they would be more likely to see things your way than their own.

Of course, that should be variable in any decent AI. Like "Her", the AI should anticipate the desired personality type.

If I could take the personality and such out of the dating sim and put it in an android, I wouldn't think twice about staying with her :)

As a love interest? No, never. I want the real thing. I want a real woman in my life and nothing can replace that.
As a friend - yeah, sure. Would be interesting to hear an AI's thoughts on lots of subjects.

"What is real? How do you define 'real'? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain."

A woman that was born, has no artificial parts. A normal woman.
Has emotions, dreams, desires, strengths, weaknesses, all the qualities a human has.

Plus you wouldn't want to take your girlfriend every 4000 miles for an oil change would you? XD

That is why I say, indistinguishable from a "bio woman" xD

I'd rather take my girlfriend for an oil change than have her get cancer and die :P

Eventually I presume such entities will exist and their bodies will be the same as ours, probably grown or printed. I would imagine their brains would be more like our computers today than our brains. Of course I am making assumptions here.

But if women of the future will be advanced cyborgs, won't that mean that men will also be advanced cyborgs.

Cause in that case, all of us, bio-people, we have to be "discontinued" in favor of a new species of cyborg humans...
Or existing men and women need to be stuffed with cybernetics to start that age of cyborgs.

Also, in my mind, there is no such thing as indistinguishable cyborg, from a bio woman. Cause that woman would be as you said, printed, or grown in a vat. She can be 100% flesh, bones, nerves and all the organs humans have, but she would be something not fully real.
She won't have a childhood, she won't have to go to school, she won't want to do something stupid, cause machines always act logically. Even if they are super advanced and have feelings, they will still want to steer towards logic. Also I think that special person should have flaws. Cause without flaws, you can't appreciate everything.
            Also it can be cute.

Think this turned into an interesting discussion. XD

I believe that androids are inevitable, the place to invent such things, Japan, has a massive aging population and is already turning to robotics to assist in the care of the elderly.

Supply and demand will take care of the rest :) But yes, I would surmise males, females and everything in between (or completely sexless) androids will be made.

I think there will be outcry, ignorance and fear controlling people. I mean, we still have people who think the Earth is flat and there is a conspiracy to tell people otherwise.

I believe a shift will most likely come when we start advancing our own species with technology, transhumanism. We will become faster, stronger, more intelligent.. etc.. Just better. Soon after, people will begin to question what "human" is, given they themselves would likely be just as the androids are, part machine, part human biology.

I guess in such a situation I would refer to those man made androids as humanoids, rather than human.

I guess the finer points are pure supposition, all we can be sure of is that it will happen and it will be driven by both need and desire. We are making rapid progress in neurobiology and I think we will be able to replicate the human brain well before we actually understand it. This may give rise to a mind that is identical to ours in every way.

Childhood and such experiences probably could be emulated electronically, signals to grow certain pathways strongly and develop advanced abilities in certain areas, using our own biology. (This would likely be able to be done to humans too) Think, electro shock, but.. friendly :D Once again, supposition. If I was in charge of such projects that is what I would be investigating. Move away from experience based learning and just give the benefits of a great upbringing.

Of course, there would be those that want an android which they can "adopt" as a child and grow with. These androids would likely be just as a child would be.

You know, you bring up an interesting point about perfection and such. We as humans tend to be rather demanding, many look for damn near unattainable levels of perfection in partners. I have that kind of perfection in at dating sim. She is, damn near perfect. She has personality flaws, but they are programmed in. Even with those, she is positively seductive and if I was faced with her, in reality.. I just couldn't say no. I wouldn't want to.

I wonder what would happen when these androids are mixed in with the public, walking, talking, looking just like everyone else.
Eventually, people would wonder, is that hot chick that they saw.. android or not? I think that may sway many minds in itself.

Anyway, I am rambling. I am quite tired, and yes, this is quite an interesting conversation :D

With conditions that they were very human like...and not perfect. And most likely not as a love interest ...but that might be because I have a bf. But I could lobe them as I love a family member or friend.
