Could you compose a hit song?

You are given a month to write and assemble a hit song. It must be about 3 minutes long, must have at least some vocals, and music, all throughout. You are given a staffed professional studio and you can hire people to play instruments of any kind and sing, however YOU must instruct them-they CANNOT have any creative input. If you can't play, sing or write music you can guide your musicians by humming, singing poorly, drawing or whatever you want to convey your ideas. You can use the singer to translate your ideas into musical language to a guitar player, for example, as well.

So could you do it? One month, and it has to be a nationally recognized hit song in any popular genre.

Yepp!! I'm confident I can!! 57
I doubt it! 11
I'd try, and it sounds fun, who knows! 44

    easiest thing ever.

    step 1:
Take a phrase from every day talking that sounds cool.
    step 2:
    Add some love/sex references.
    step 3:
Repeat the "cool" phrase a thousand times.
    step 4:
make a video clip with half naked women.
    step 5:
    Enjoy your hit.

Isn't that how all hit songs are made...?

Composing a song is harder than it seems, people...but only if you live in Japan, since their songs are about life!

In America/Britain/Canada/etc, just write about sex/love/drugs/partying, add a catchy beat, and PROFIT!

A little hard since all of the popularity comes from money

I'd try it for fun. But to make it a hit, I'd have to release a sex tape, and I'm just not sure that would go over to well with my folks.

Lol. If I would make a song from the bottom of my heart it would be about nature, illustrated with traditional instruments and metal music. No way in hell that'll ever get mainstream and to be fair I'm glad it isn't.
I guess I could TRY to make a pop song, but that would be soul less and crappy. And as I'd rather not write anything I do not take pride in, no I wouldn't be able to do it I think. Perhaps something like Coldplay or alternative rock songs, but only that.
Never ever composed a song either.

I'd try. I've made a few songs on Garage Band... however I've also noticed that once you sample a lot of the loops you start to recognize them in other songs.

I don't think I'd want to. I love musicians and I wouldn't want to take creative expression from them.

    • Don't think of it as taking expression away, it's no different than asking an orchestra to play sheet music at your wedding...Think of that and that you are helping a struggling musician financially by giving them a job. The only reason they can't have input is because it's supposed to be all up to you to make the song a hit. No one can help you with the creative parts, musicians or otherwise. That's the entire point of the challenge, to have a non-musical (or non-professional musician) person make a hit song!

from what i hear on the radio..(i usually listen to hip-hop wich is getting progressively worse each year >.>) its jot down a few lyrics about your money, then about how many girls you date simulatneously, then through in a couple of disrespectful slurrs and comments about females
and put some generic rap beat behind it all and BAM! theres your hit...for the next couple of weeks...

atleast thats how this newer crap seems to sound...

Well these days, all you have to do is download a selected beat off the internet (besides, who uses talented people to actually drum for songs anymore?), then select a really repetitive guitar riff, some very simple bass, and wa-lah, you have a hit. Don't worry, it won't be creative, intelligent, not-annoying or all of the above. It will be a smash hit, and like the rest of these morons, you'll be forgotten within a month!

    • OK, well it's May 25...post back with a link to your song in a month if it's sooo easy. I'll wait...

I can play and I can write music but singing? I'm not blessed.

Hit song? Nah. It'd be nice and I'd like it a lot myself but very few other people would. And, to be honest, I'm glad.
