Computer games take priority over my kids, iin?

My kids are really boring and computer games are so compelling these days that I feel it's crazy not to play them... my kids have their own games anyway on their stupid little kiddy smartphones. All I want to do when I get home is have a couple of drinks and turn off my brain, at least the part that has to deal with reality.

"My kids are really boring and crack cocaine is so compelling that I feel it's crazy not to use it."

Computer games are designed to be addictive.

Whatever games you and your kids are hooked on, the designers obviously included all the right lures to keep you coming back for more. Congratulations on behaving like an absolutely normal fish, and teaching your kids that they should just gulp down every sparkling thing a corporation dangles in front of their snouts. I'm sure they'll grow up to be good little wage-slaves who do the normal thing, and follow the herd in whichever direction the media and marketing shepherds steer it.

Maybe your kids are boring because they never do anything other than play stupid computer games? Maybe you're pretty boring because you never do anything other than work, drink, and play stupid computer games?

Being a parent isn't easy, but it sounds like if you continue with the way you're doing the job currently, then you and your kids will look back on their childhoods as a blank place where nothing significant happened, and you started to detach from each other. If you like the idea of not knowing your kids and them not knowing the person you are, you're doing all the right things.

I thought you were a fairly intelligent user. That changed after you compared video games to an illegal drug.

Would you have been happier if I had compared them to alcohol?

Not quite as addictive - for most people - but a perfectly legal way for parents to escape their "boring" kids.

I misunderstood your comment. It seemed to me you said video games were just as unhealthy and harmful as cocaine. My bad.

Ummmm, there's nothing wrong with playing some computer games to release some tension, but you shouldn't let it consume *all* your free time. You still have children you know.

Kids are not meant to be fun. You are their father, and you have the obligation to tend to your kids no matter how fun or how painful it is to you. If you don't, you are going to become neglectful and it is sure to impact their development negatively. If you give them some time and love and act like a good parent, you are then allowed to play your games in the remainder of your free time.

It's normal to enjoy playing video games. However, you chose to have kids. Now spend time with them and talk to them regularly.

I guess a trip to the gym would be out of the question, huh?
