Compulsive book buyer

I have this odd habit of constantly buying books and never reading them. Books are expensive too! I mean I spend all of my spare money on books and then never read the books I buy. I have often told myself that i'm going to read all of the books on my shelf but I get distracted an then buy more books. Is this normal? Does anyone else do this?

I have the same compulsive books buying habit...

First, if it's obcessive and cause you some problems, you should go right away to consult a psychiatrist. Is it tough to pay your bills due to your books buyings? Does it start to take too much place in your house? Is it tough for you to throw away (to garbage) the 3 years ago phonebook of your city (consider it if your have last year and this year phonebooks)?

If you dont want to consult, get an iPad (the new ones with Retina display for a better resolution) and get some ebooks. You could find mostly all common litterature books easily, there is a lot of them available freely through Google, Project Gutenberg, etc.

For recent books, litterature or technical stuff, you could find books on almost all subjects on p2p sites (i.e. thepiratebay, etc.) That's especially usefull for very expensive technical books that you normally do not read completely but like to use as a reference.

Furthermore, you could find really cheap books from second hand bookstores or in shops where poor people are going to buy second hand clothes and crappy stuff. They almost always have a book section where you can find interesting books. I found some treasures in that kind of place.

Dont forget Amazon and alibris, they have sometime very good prices especially for used books who are commons. Rare books are sometime pretty expensives... but the shipping price is oftenly high so watchout!

Last thing, try resell some old books, it's pretty hard I know, they are like puppies, you want to protect them! But it's a pretty good feeling after you did it, especially your old phonebooks, sears and ikea catalogs, etc.

You might want to consider buying them secondhand. They're much cheaper that way.
I buy tons and tons of books as well, but in most cases I do read at least part of them . . .

  • I would try to avoid the bookstore and maybe do something quickly with the money before you want to spend it on books. Put it towards bills, grocerys, or even buy something else like clothes.
