Columbus day or indigenous people’s day?

Columbus Day celebrates an event from 1492, but it didn’t become a U.S. Federal holiday until over 400 years later. Some people think it shouldn’t be a holiday at all. To some, Columbus did not “discover” America. Instead he represents the beginning of European colonization of America. Some states and cities across the United States are renaming Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day and celebrating Native American tradition and culture. advocates in Minneapolis pused to rename this holiday.

Why would it be "Indigenous People’s Day" when most ot them are DEAD that's nothing to celebrate about.

You could say the same about Columbus.

I really don't understand that argument because nobody lives for 400+ years of course he's dead. But his lineage passed on unlike the natives which at this point are in the minority, by far.

I think a good solution would be for the natives and Americans to cast a vote and lets see what happens. That's fair.

The "lineage", descendants of the natives are still with us all over Latin America, and they are a lot more plentiful in numbers than the lineage of Columbus.

Columbus was no hero. You could say he had a lot of courage to embark on his exploratory journey because he didn't know where he was going to end up. In fact he didn't even know where he was when he got there.

He was sailing under orders from the king of Spain who was under orders from Pope Gregory to "discover" unknown lands and to conquer and permanently enslave the inhabitants if they weren't Christian, ( Christian at that time meant Catholic), and to steal their wealth and claim their lands.

Columbus deserves to be honored about as much as Hitler or Stalin, for all the harm he brought to the Americas.

Wasn't the natives Indiens? And I believe when they were being slaughtered fled to what is now Mexico and bred with the Spaniard creating a mutt race. Those that didn't resist were put on reservations and given amnesty "rightfully so" (unlike the negros with affirmative-action, welfare etc) but even still that's arguable because the amount of time passed they can easily assimilate into the new population/culture any time they want, but don't and that's ok.

But to change Columbus day into "Indigenous People’s Day" is absurd. One thing I'll give them is that the Comanche were some brutal and hardened warriors of all the Indians.

It's obvious that you don't know what you're talking about.

I have to correct my previous post. It was Pope Nickolas the 5th, not Gregory. I changed it earlier but the change didn't take for some reason, and now I can go back to edit it.

You do realize that the people, referred to as Native Americans, are not indigenous to North America. They came from South America and Asia a long time ago. So in reality, they are not Native Americans and should be referred to as the first immigrants. And Lief Ericsson was on North American soil a long time before Columbus landed in the Bermudas. He never set foot on America.

Celebrating Columbus Day is a tribute to a man with a vision who actually had the guts to do it. It isn't about discovering the Americas, it's about a man with a great spirit of adventure and going against the conventional wisdom of the day.
How many people do you know who actually do that?

Él era más que un hombre de su tiempo . ¿Ha oído hablar de la Inquisición ? ¿Las cruzadas? ¿Por qué le destacar ?
Reconocerlo por su singularidad , no es su similitud con todos los demás de su tiempo.

He was but a man of his time. Ever hear of the Inquisition? The Crusades? Why single him out?
Recognize him for his uniqueness, not his similarity to all the others of his time.
