Can you tell if someone is mildly autistic?

I am asking this because I thought I was pretty good at blending in. I'm wondering if I do not have very good insight into how I act.

Today somebody at the bar asked if I was autistic. I get this once in a while and feel somewhat confused about how they can tell. I have had so much social skill training and work very hard at trying to understand people, even though I have realize I probably never will.

I'm wondering if most people notice or not because I can't figure out how they can tell. I can notice if somebody has severe mental health symptoms that are completely obvious such as being non-verbal, but people with milder symptoms I don't notice unless they tell me.

I think most people can tell. It's not necessarily that you're not well assimilated but most animals including humans can sense when someone is slightly different. Don't feel bad about it though it's up to you whether you want to share the info. I personally think it's rude to ask that sort of question.

    • I am actually very surprised by these results. I'm not bothered by people asking because it lets me know what behaviors to work on. It's better than being accused of being on drugs, which I get even more often.

I understand how you feel. I used to think I was pretty good at "passing" as NT, since I would just mimic phrases and tone of voice that I have observed my mom using when she interacts with others (my mom is my role model because I view her as a pinnacle of kindness and virtue, and she is incredibly popular with the people in our neighborhood as well as our fellow family members).

However, I found out I was sorely mistaken about my ability to fit in when a kindly man at the Y approached me and offered me a position on the local Special Olympics team. I initially thought he meant "Paralympic" team and told him that I wasn't physically disabled. I joked that I had some "problems upstairs" though, to which he replied solemnly, "I know."

Nowadays, when I look back at the way other grown adults have treated me, it's pretty obvious that they could tell something was... different about me. For instance I am often spoken to and treated as a child, even though I am approaching my mid-twenties. I mean, it's nice that people are always so, well, nice to me, but sometimes I get frustrated that I'm not treated as an equal. I once even lost my temper at my own mom over this, exclaiming that "I'm not a child anymore!" (Somehow I have forgotten the events leading up to this outburst, even though it happened fairly recently).

Anyway, I don't really have any meaningful input. Just wanted to share my experiences as a fellow autistic person.

A good sign is someone who is clearly trying TOO hard to "blend in".

I t depends where on the spectrum they are. Some are very high-functioning and just seem shy or a bit eccentric, while others are obviously quite a bit different.

People can have traits of it and still not actually have the disorder. See a clinical psychologist if you're interested in a diagnosis.

I usually can't tell, since most people have "quirks" I don't really see how its different from many autism spectrum traits. It seems kind of rude that some one would ask though.. But I guess it depends..

I don't think one could unless you have some schooling on it or deal with these type of people on regular bases. Otherwise I do not think you would be able to always know if they were just mildly autistic. I know I had a friend one time that was a little slow. I noticed this when I realized she was having issues keeping up with the class work. So I tried to tutor her.

I don't know if I can tell. I'd say "probably not" though, because they only person I've known was autistic was a relative's son and he is quite clearly... "non-functional".
Aside from that, I've never met a person and thought they were autistic.

I might be a bit autistic myself though. I scored 50 on the AQ test.

I can often tell, mainly when i know the person well but sometimes when I dont.

But I'm fairly familiar with it, as we have family history. It became an interest of mine, and I had to do some work and projects on and with kids with Asperger's.
