Can you sue someone for not signing papers?

I am trying to file as independent so I can more benefits. I am no longer on my parents income and they are not claiming me for taxes. However to prove this I was told they need to sign a paper saying they are not claiming me on taxes. Which they refuse to do. Can I sue them since they already said they arnt and isnt pretending they are when they are not technically fraud? If I am filed as independent I might get more school money and they really cant pay my school but I dont get enough to cover my schooling costs.

Im guessing this wouldn't happen if you paid taxes, find an easy part time and claim yourself, the proof of your low income will help too

So...you want to be declared independent so you can mooch off the government?

And you're already mooching off your parents?

    Grow the fuck up.

    • No, I want to be independent so I have enough money for school, and I dont have to worry about everything going back to my parents. Since as a dependent it will go back to them, if I agree to that or not. If I am independent I also get more money, since clearly I cant afford it. Independent means they only charge you, that your benefits are based on your income, and you do not have to get family involved if you need assistance.

You can file emancipation forms in court. Your parents signatures are not needed.

It doesn't have anything to do with whether or not you are claimed on anyone's taxes. As of 18, I wasn't claimed on anyone's taxes anymore but the state still considers me a dependent until I am 23 (which I am now). I still got financial aid because my Mom makes jack shit for a salary and technically supports 3 kids (including me) so it worked out in my favor.

Your parents can sign whatever the hell they want, that doesn't mean that you will be considered independent.

Technically you can sue anybody. The question is, will you win?

Your parents are not obligated to sign anything or submit their tax return. Even if they did you still wouldn't be considered independent because that is not how it works. If you are under 24 you must meet very strict criteria to be considered independent and not being claimed on your parent's tax return is NOT on that list.

Yeah, you can't be an independent on your FAFSA just because your parents sign a paper that they don't claim you on their taxes. You're only considered independent if you're 24, married, have a child you support more than halfway, served in the military, are a veteran and a few other exceptions. You can look them up on FAFSA's website. I guess I am agreeing with Wigz, but my post is actually directed to the OP www.fafsa.ed.gov

Why are they refusing to sign it? I don't know about suing, but it seems like there should be something you could do in this situation. It definitely doesn't sound fair...
