Can you identify the continent?

The picture is of a world capital city. From the picture alone, what continent do you think the city is in?

I'll give the answer on Saturday, if anyone is interested.

Europe 33
Antarctica 2
Africa 25
Asia 22
North America 8
Australasia 8
South America 16

If I was determined enough, I may have tried to find the street address.

I got a bit bored, so...
I can't find numbers, but the name of the street is Kingsway and the nearest intersection is Pioneer Rd.

The photo was likely taken near these co-ordinates:
          -29.313177,27.479493

          • I'm guessing someone uploaded the image to Microsoft's photo tourism system and it identified the place for you. If not, I'd really love to know how you resolved it to co-ordinates.

Hmm, they're not in the image metadata, are they? I know IIN resizes images so I thought all that would be stripped out.

I used Google Earth along with a few other photos tagged on its map to find the buildings you see in that photo, then estimated the camera position that would get that angle.

Quite a quick find, since it's right in the middle of the city, on the main road, almost next to the city marker on the map.

It's the lost city of Atlantis!

It's CLEARLY somewhere in Antarctica. They had a massive coalition of people to remove all the snow. Yeah, that's it...

But not really. From reading up in the conversation, I'd say Africa. More specifically, I'd say a major city in let's say South Africa?

All I care about however, is that there is a KFC. And that's good enough for me.

Before I read the comments, the only thing I was able to determine was that it definitely was not North America because the cars were driving on the left. That is probably just me though, because I am not diverse in my knowledge of other countries. Heck, I'm not even very diverse in the knowledge of my own country, let alone others.

I like the concept though: view the picture, and try to determine something (the country in this case) based on the analyses. It might could have been applied a little bit better, but I'm not really sure how though.

    • My friend and I used to spend our lunchtimes finding pictures on WorldCityPhotos and testing the other to see if they could identify the country. After that, we started guessing distances between world cities or predicting world weather. We're both insane (and competitive), and we did get pretty good at it. Any place in the world, any time of year, we'll only be a few degrees out. I'd be rubbish at it but I hated him beating me, so I put the effort in. :D

Wow, that sounds like a fun way to spend lunch!

Man, that sounded so sarcastic when I read it back just now, but I assure you, It wasn't.

Dammit, that sentence did too! Oh well, if you think I'm being sarcastic just deal with it okay :P

YEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!! I GOT IT RIGHT!!!! It was a psychological guess, though. I knew it'd be the one we'd least expect to look like a city.

Australasia? Eurasia is a content, and Oceania is a continent. Australasia isn't.

    • But if we went off continental plates, half of Iceland would be North American. Sometimes you have to go by political geography.

Never really used "Australasia" myself, although I have used "Eurasia" before - meaning Europe and the Asian countries that are directly connected.

Ah, Dutch is my native language, so I interpreted 'continent' to have the same meaning as 'continent' in Dutch. When you follow political geography, the Dutch word for it is 'werelddeel'. Didn't know that continent in English can mean both 'continent' and 'werelddeel'

        • That's really interesting. I guess we should probably have two words as well. I have Dutch family (although I don't see them much), but it's always nice to learn something about the Dutch.

    I guessed Africa.

Why would you ask this question were it not an unexpected answer; if not to dispel stereotypes? What purpose would this poll serve if it turned out to be Asia or North America? And Antarctica is too unexpected, so I'm going with Africa.

Can't be North America - they're driving on the left.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Correct, and your reasoning is correct too. worldcityphotos.com is one of my favourite websites and I was struck by how un-African this picture looks. It doesn't even look like Maseru (which does generally look African).

and yes, i can believe that it's in Africa. Many people think "Africa" and think of stereotypes - starving villages or majestic landscapes.

I got to go there once - to the republic of south africa. one of the women in my group had lived in England and said that "if it wasn't for the heat I'd think I was in England again".

        • Yeah, definitely. Parts of South Africa are very European because of the links with the Dutch/English. Just like Shanghai is quite English, or certain parts of India. I can't remember where it is but there's a town in America that is utterly convincingly Bavarian. Looks amazing!

            not surprising.

around here things don't look foreign exactly but... we have a lot of influence from other cultures

german, korean, filipino, mexican just to name a few.
