It depends what type of vegetarian you are (or want to be). Eggs, milk and fish (ovo, lacto, and pesca) are the common exceptions from veganism. Although I don't especially like milk (except sterilised milk), I use it in cooking. I eat eggs and fish too, and am strictly an ovo-lacto-pescatarian.

At heart, I'm a vegan, but it's an almost impossible lifestyle for me to stay healthy on (and it's not varied enough, plus I'd die without cheese).

If you're anything like me, you'll find your brand of vegetarianism changing (in both directions). I have been a vegan and I have avoided eggs and fish (they're both a life - if the egg was fertilised, anyway) and even milk (though nothing dies to make milk).

To answer your question, though, yes, you can eat eggs but you are then technically an ovo-vegetarian not a common or garden vegetarian.

      This.

      OP:
I've been a vegetarian for 6 years, I've always eaten eggs. When I went veg I ate tuna (I never liked fish except tuna), foods with animal products (like chicken ramen), and eggs. I stopped eating those things (cept eggs) completely within my first 2 years. Whenever it was brought up, no matter what stage, my answer was always "I'm a vegetarian".
As long as you don't eat meat (meaning chicken and beef as well as red meat (no cheating =P )) you are a vegetarian. Grab some fish and eggs if that's your veggie way.

Vegetarians do not eat animals, fish are animals. People who eat fish and no other animals are Pescetarians, a strict form of meat eating.

I'm aware of this. I just don't give a damn. My advice still stands. OP can be veggie any way they choose.

Depends on what kind of vegetarian you are, but really, I wouldn't if I were you. Why eat the egg but not the chicken?

Yes, I believe they are called "ovo-vegetarians".

An ovo-vegetarian can eat eggs. Vegans do not, lacto-vegetarians do not. No form of vegetarianism allows for fish, Pescetarianism is a form of meat eating.

  • I thought that's the difference between a vegeterian and vegan, the first kind doesn't eat just meat. the latter one is insane and got humans confused with cows.

personally, I don't get them both, but i think it's alright to eat eggs.

If you're doing it for ethical reasons, eating eggs will depend on your ethics, as another poster stated. If you're doing it for the true label of vegetarian, you can't. But that's a silly reason to not eat something.

I think no. They were lil chikies once and doesn't that count for something?

i know nothing about vegetarian rules, but it's definitely a good choice to eat eggs. you can't just live off of things that grow from the ground. unless you want to look like a stick.
eggs are a very good source of protein, and vitamin D. and they're also great for the brain and eyes.

Common misconception. "True" vegetarians can be fat. Starch, butter, soy products. Fat is everywhere- it's out to kill us all. o_O

Yes. Generally speaking, vegetarians are ovo lacto, meaning we eat eggs and dairy. People who don't eat eggs and dairy usually identify as vegans.

It depends. My aunt is veg and she and her kids eat eggs and fish, so technically she's an ovo-pescetarian, I think. I may have spelt that incorrectly, but I'm too tired to google.

A vegan would consume no animal products, so no eggs, milk, etc.

Really, it's your choice. If it's an ethical thing, then whatever fits in with your ethics.
