Can traumatic events in your past end up effecting your child?

Let's say that a person who has experienced traumatic events ends up having a child. Is it possible that the parent's traumatic memories could somehow get passed on to their child and if they did, could these memories have an negative effect on the child?

I believe that it can. 14
I don't believe that it can. 20

I don't think memories can be transferred. A parent's traumatic experience will probably shape them and might have an effect on the child but it depends on whether the parent changes their attitude and projects their feelings onto their children.

Watch the TED Talks video "Annie Murphy Paul: What we learn before we're born"
    It's on Youtube.

  • No, memories are not genetic. however if the parent acts dysfunctional those behaviors can be learned.

  • No. Babies are blank little slates. None of your memories get transferred via genes to your offspring.

Mental disorders manifest from childhood. Dysfunction from childhood can be genetic or passed on from environmental situations. Alcoholism is a genetic disease as is bi-polar disorder.

    They can be transfered verbally.

Anime7's got it exactly right. Genetic memory may work in a very general way, but certainly not in one generation and definitely not regarding the experiences of a single entity in the gene pool.
