My friends see to think that a serial killer can be rehabilitated and sent back into society. They also feel that way about serial rapists. They go on about how unfair it is that a rapist or murderer can't get a job working with kids or in the public once they get out. What do you think?

Serial killers? Improbable, butnot impossible, as most psychopaths have the ability to feel emotion if they so choose. However, rapists? Not so much. To rape someone, you have to be comfortable with exerting power over another human in the worst way possible. Crazy people are definitely capable of change, usually through therapy or medication. Toxic people have to really try, which might be hard after being so, well, toxic.
tl;dr : it depends which you are
Anybody is capable of doing anything, it's just a matter of will. That being said, people who have committed such horrible acts to others should have to face equally horrible consequences. Then they have to decide to change or not.
Personally, I believe that people that have done what you've listed above should face solitary life imprisonment.
