Ex heavy smoker here - once you're addicted (which happens very quickly!) it will only "calm your nerves" because it's giving you a hit of something that you are addicted to, and you get antsy if you don't have it. Overall you become more stressed from smoking.

The way I quit was by going for a run every time I got a bad urge, even in the night. I became an excellent runner but it took a long time for my lung capacity to become healthy again. First few months I was spluttering and wheezing, it was gross.

Look, using nicotine in any form is not a habit you want to pick up.
At first it is no big deal but someday you look back and think, "Well fuck, I wasted a lot of money and probably did some damage to my health".
I smoked for 15 years and yeah, it calms the nerves but the drawbacks are a bitch. Things like "needing a smoke" at inopportune times, the money wasted, burning holes in stuff like clothes, car seats, whatever.

All of this is spot on, as another former smoker. If you’re not already addicted to nicotine, don’t go there.

I completely agree. It’s also very hard to quit once you start. I’ve probably quite about 10 times already.

It gets to a point where you want to quit more than you want to smoke.
My two main things were that I was tired of being a slave to it plus I was getting to where I could not laugh without coughing.

I quit on a friday so I would have two stress free days to suffer in peace. Yeah I am off weekends.

Bad thing is that even 14 months after quitting, sometimes i still want one. The crave is not overwhelming but is there.
I might mention I quit cold turkey. No pills, vape, chew, patches, nothing.

Yeah I need to quit cold turkey. I’ve tried pills patches vape and gum no luck. I just need to find something to distract me. And I need to stop wasting my money on it.

don't smoke, it's a horrible habit. It doesn't help anxiety, it's just a temporary bandaid, you said so yourself...

Nicotine is a substance that can have both an excitatory or relaxing effect, depending on the individual. So it doesn't always relieve anxiety. One thing for sure, it is addictive, carcinogenic and harmful to your health. It's not helping you with anxiety at all and it could be having a stimulant effect on your brain, thus potentiating your anxiety. So what's the point in using it?

It won't remain "one every now and then."
See, this is one of the most addictive substances in the world. When you are older and let's say, face a mid-life crisis...you can start heavy smoking and as you know, this is particularly harmful to your health - COPD, lung cancer, etc Smoking just one cigarette day can increase the risk of getting other potentially fatal diseases - like stroke and heart disease. Read up on that hey.

I'd imagine the only anxiety it relieves is the anxiety caused by addiction to nicotine...

    So that doesn't really work.

I smoke, I enjoy it, I am glad I started, and I have no intention of ever quitting. My 3 kids (teens) smoke too.

I smoke and yes smoking feels good. But I would never advise someone to start. This is a bad habit and then before you know it you're a slave. All that money wasted! I quit some years ago when I was pregnant and after delivery then I started again. Just two puffs and here I am today smoking about five a day. It may not seem much but it affects my appetite and I have the body of a twelve years old. And the cravings are so bad.

If you can stop, please stop now.

Yes, it does release feel-good chemicals in brain plus it also makes you awake and alert. But there are prices of damaging your lungs plus deadly cancers.

Every smoker thinks that but eventually they get up to a pack a day.

How about none a day. Also, don't vape either. It is just the latest scam, of course they say "It isn't as bad as smoking'. Probably true but stay off it.
