Can i be anorexic and not know it?

Eating has become a huge effort for me. I can't eat unless i'm extremely hungry and i definitely don't eat as much as i used to. Food is just hard to swallow, especially meat, rice, mashed patatos and sometimes cheese (which i love). But i can eat chips and sweets pretty good, however those are not my favorites. I end up chewing and spitting out what i can't swallow of meats and stuff like that (not the chips). I am a few pounds underweight even though i would like to be bigger. I don't look at my body very much, but when i did i was bigger (by no means overweight) and wished to have a flatter tummy. Oddly, i can eat better when people are around me, when i can watch someone else eat. I'm just wondering if i could be anorexic even though i do not consciously want to be skinny?

if you were, you would be aware of your condition consciously 4

Do you mean that the OP is anorexic and doesn't know it, or that it's impossible to be anorexic and know you're anorexic?

Well, I thought one of the criteria for being anorexic, was that you didn't accept that you were incredibly thin, but thought you just really needed to lose weight. Just being thin and knowing that you are is not anorexia.

That sounds more like an intake or digestive disorder and I would *strongly* recommend that you see a doctor for this problem because it is not healthy to allow this to hinder your nutritional intake.

I think that the anorexia that you may be thinking of is "anorexia nervosa" which is an eating disorder that is directly connected to body image. You are anorexic due to digestive issues and you do not choose to starve yourself because you see yourself as fat no matter how much you weight, but you probably don't have anorexia nervosa which is what most people refer to when they talk about anorexia.

Wishing for a flatter tummy is not the same as having anorexia nervosa. I wish I had a flatter stomach too but that wish hasn't become so that I feel that need to stop eating in order to achieve it. It's normal to wish to have a better figure. Doesn't mean that you are mentally ill in any way, just means that you are somewhat self-conscious. In that case, join the club, you're among friends.

your saliva production could be hindered too, if food is getting stuck..do you keep well hydrated?

Do you feel sick after eating? Also, sometimes if you don't eat for a long time, hunger turns into nausea and it can be very difficult to eat. Its important to fuel your body, but 3 big means a day doesnt seem right to me. Maybe you are a snacker? it seems like you are able to eat snacks, so you could try switching your snacks up with some more nutritionally beneficial items and try that. theres no one way to eat! if you are worried, go see a doctor for sure. do you smoke cigarettes?

    • I do smoke. Food doesn't make me feel sick though, i just can't swallow it! Like today, i tried to eat fries and i panicked because it felt like they were getting stuck in my throat. I have to drink a lot when i eat and get the food down to tiny particles so the drink can just wash it down. It really makes eating no fun. It's become more of a job than something enjoyable.

Doesn't sound like anorexia then. But it could be some kind of medical issue.

But short of seeing a doctor about it, maybe you could add some of those nutrition shakes like Ensure to your diet.

Hmmm, well I have a lot of trouble swallowing my food because I have GERD. It weakens your esophagus and makes it difficult to eat. You should definitely talk to your doctor, what you're dealing with may very well be a medical condition.

If you are concious that you're too thin and you wish to be good -not to thin- I dont think it's anorexia. But I don't know.
