Can a cover of a song be better than the original?

Just the other day I was listening to a cover of "I wanna hold your hand," and thought that it was actually better than the original done by the Beatles. However, there are people that I mention this to that get defensive and tell me that nothing can beat the original version. Can a cover of a song actually outshine the original version?

No, the original version will always be the best 3

well its a very subjective question. I can think of a handful of songs which i prefer the cover of (for example, where did you sleep last night by nirvana, a cover of a ledbelly song) but who can say its actually better, its all a matter of taste.

There are plenty of times where I like the original and the cover equally, but for different reasons.

I prefer the Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of "Dear Prudence" to the Beatles original version.

It can but rarely in my experience. Who did the cover you mentioned?

    • I enjoyed the version done in the movie "Across the Universe." Slowing the song down conveyed the meaning of the song better in my opinion.

You should look up Rufus Wainwright's version.

Of course it can. Since it is done by a different artist and often a different style. You should check the metal version of "My milkshakes". Its so much better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ESzOzU8vZo&feature=share&list=UUdQcFHghP7h5WmPM0lVZp2A&index=4

Fuck I was going to say Srv little wing over hendrix. Glad to see someone else appreciate Srv. He's (in my opinion) the best guitar player.

How about the Cure's version of Purple Haze?

Stevie ray won over Hendrix with monster guitar skill. I listened to the cure purple haze, not for me. Sounded like overproduced synthetic 80s music. Wanna hear some overproduced synthetic 80s music updated to modern? Disturbed land of confusion. message fits better these day, good video too.

Of course. Although I suppose the original is, well, just that, original. The cover isn't. That's important.

Sometimes the covers are more approachable and I good way to get people to cross listen to other types of music they wouldn't other-wise. and some songs are covers that people don't even realizes. like "I love rock en roll" was a cover by joan jett

Example: Skyscraper by Demi Lavato AND Kerli

I like Demi's version because i heard hers first (usually how it is with me). But then when i realized a girl, Kerli, also wrote and sung Skyscraper but strangely Kerli's was better....

it depends some i like the cover, others the original. for example, (and i know ill gat flak for this one)i prefer aerosmiths cover of "come together over the Beatles original. same goes for George thurogoods cover of hank williams "move it on over", although the original is pretty good. george thurogoods cover of "one bourbon one scotch and one beer" i prefer over the original as well.

both bob seegers original and metallica's cover of "turn the page" are both awesome.

and lastly, the original "can you guess my name (rolling stones) is still better than guns and roses cover.

Yes, the music business is facked up. There is people who should never have been accepted who are in the industry compared to people who aren’t in the industry but are amazing.

I like The Ataris' cover of "Boys of Summer" way more than the original. Their version is really energetic and intense, with electric guitars shredding all over the place, whereas the original is just sort of a low-key, typical 80s song.

I also like Sixpence None The Richer's cover of "There She Goes" more than the original by The La's. Aside from using a better singer (in my humble opinion), the repetitive part of the melody is used more sparingly so it has a greater impact during the parts of the song where it does come into play.

Also, I enjoyed the Big Al (from Vocaloid) cover of "Still Alive" from Portal. I like it mostly for personal reasons, because I can picture one of my male OCs singing the song. Though it does have it's technical merits, because it's one of the better English Vocaloid songs out there since you can actually understand everything he's saying/singing.

I my opinion, yes. It's been done many times. Most people will deny typically because they have a closed my or they want to protect their precious original, but I think so.

The recording equipment used by the cover band would also be of much better quality than what the Beatles used.

  • Yes, someone shared a piano-only cover song a few years ago that was maybe better than the original, or so I think.
