British people, are you a fan of karl pilkington ?

I am American and have been listening to old Ricky Gervais Show clips because of Karl Pilkington's hilariousness. Not to mention watching the imported 'An Idiot Abroad'. He's very funny and I've been wondering, how popular is he in the UK? Is he a minor celebrity or as a friend of Ricky Gervais does he get a lot of attention?

He is the funniest man on the planet, and he doesn't even mean to be funny.

And he just comes up with so much bullshit... and then i think about what he said... and i agree with him

    BULLSHIT

One of my friends sat next to him on a train from down south to up north and said he is a really friendly interesting guy to talk to.

No. I honestly don't understand the hype.

He was a novel 'character' at first, but I have a low tolerance of repetition and the whole dumb act with occasionally sprinklings of accidental insight really doesn't do anything for me. Also I find Ricky and Stephen's predictable bullying inane; half the time it feels like they're overreacting to simple things Karl says to imply humour, when it's without substance.

I loved The Office. I loved Extras. I disliked Life's Too Short. I disliked Derek.

And 'An Idiot Abroad' pisses me off because they send a dull comedic man to some amazing places. We watch his bemused and confused reaction, but often the environments and cultures explored deserve much better. It's not a travel programme enhanced by the addition of Karl Pilkington, it's a travel programme that is damaged by the addition of Karl Pilkington.

Anyway, everyone has a different sense of humour. I totally respect that some people enjoy Karl Pilkington, Lee Evans, Brendan O'Carroll, EVEN Leigh Francis. I just don't :/

Karl's loveable, Ricky Gervais is a cunt (albeit a hilarious one).

I like Karl but I LOVE Ricky, he's really funny, and in an intelligent and witty way as well. He discusses really interesting things in comedy like religion and science. Love his podcasts.

He's moderately well-known, I think. I certainly like him a lot. He's one of the few people on TV who don't have an accent (because he's from the same place as me and we have the same accent).

I've also got a friend who is very Karl-like and comes out with the same kind of things.

Is your friend's head as round as his?

If only he had a head as round as an orange! He has plenty of other things we can pick on him for, though. :D

I *love* Karl Pilkington! If you have enough time and haven't seen it, then you should give this a watch.:D

He doesn't try to be funny, he just is, which is the epitome of what I like in terms of humour. I usually have a hard time laughing a lot a things which feel really scripted, and this doesn't. I really don't see him as an idiot either, and I don't laugh at him because I think he's stupid or something. As for your other question, he is fairly popular here.

As for the video link, the bit about him wondering who the three legged boy's careers adviser was cracks me up. Not as much as "sat round the piano, singing happy birthday for the 8th time that day", though. Hahahaha!

"Right, we've got one leg out...and here's the other two!":D

    • Me too. :D

I was so worried that his experiences travelling abroad would change him, make him more worldly. I'm very glad it has had very little affect on him thus far. You're right, he's not stupid - he does seem to give things quite a bit of consideration. It's his interpretation of the world around him which is funny - he sees things in such an odd way. His explanations are fantastic!

It bugs me when Ricky is overly mean to him though.

Yeah. An Idiot Abroad didn't make me laugh *that* much for some reason, although I did like it. I'm not sure if you'd have heard about it, but there's this show which I'm pretty sure involves Karl acting. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3UvuoCFDcs)

I'm not sure if I'd find him funny acting. Like I said, he doesn't seem to try to be funny. Have you seen "Learn English with Ricky Gervais- Pilot Episode" before? It's on Youtube, and there's this bit in it which is hilarious.:D

        • Wah, I can't imagine him acting. So, I do want to see the clip, but for some reason I can't get it to play beyond the first five seconds. I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm not a fan of Merchant - what a dweeb, is he in it too?

I'm not sure, I haven't seen it. Just saw the advert for it. I don't think he's in it, though.:)

    • Yeah, I spent much of my vacation listening to his conversations from Ricky Gervais' radio show. I love it!
