British and americans same now in most ways?

It seems now that the younger generations in the UK, or even with almost anyone younger than 40-something, Brits and Americans are now the same in almost every way except the accents, Americans taking out the u in words like "colour", and some of the curse words are different such as "fucking wanker" in the UK instead of "motherfucker" in America (the "fuck" part is of course the same in both places). Americans and Brits are the same now in so many ways; they both say "fuck", "fucking" and in general curse all the time, they both hold a high interest in wanting to get drunk and get laid (in UK, it's the pubs, and US it's the bars, but that's a small difference, they both go clubbing though), they both now hold a very high importance on anything superficial and wanting to look good superficially, they're both largely hypocrites and selfish in most ways, and they both now don't give two shits anymore about manners or respecting others.

The old, now grossly inaccurate images of the English being formal polite "proper" tea drinking manner holders has now either died out or is only the oldest generations now. I can't believe how some shows like Family guy still portray the English in such a way (I'm sure most of you have seen the "English silly nannies" Family guy episode), but even that episode was 10 years ago so I'm sure even the Family guy producers have now caught on to modern day Britain now. I can't believe that there's anybody left who still thinks the English are stuffy, formal, manner holding butlers and such.

The British still drive on the wrong side of the road and use the metric system.

    • There still are differences like with driving on the left side of the road, fish n chip shops, the sun newspaper, etc. I guess I was referring mostly to modern character and attitude similarities between the Americans and British.

For a start England was the birthplace of the Imperial system. They went metric to match the rest of the world. The Imperial system is so clumsy with 5280 feet to the mile and so forth. The metric system is decimal based so a kilometer is one thousand metres. A Metre is about 39 inches.

Doing a little research I have found the reason for driving on the right is due mainly from the mule trains used in early settlement days. The mule skinner (driver) would sit on the left rear mule to leave his right arm free to snap the whip to encourage the animals to pull. If another mule train was coming toward him he would stay to the right to be sure his wagon wheels would not get caught on the other wagons wheels. When cars were started to be produced everyone followed along with driving on the right. The first cars produced had tillers instead of steering wheels but when cars started using steering wheels the wheel was on the left so the driver could easily avoid vehicles coming the other way the same way the mule trains did. Google is such a wonderful tool. :)

When did they start producing cats and why did that effect driving?

Were there cat trains and cat skinners? : )

Hahah I've never had cream in my tea before, milk sure. Iced tea is yummy too! I like all the teas.

It's just stereotype, we still have inaccurate american stereotypes. Although, I do take it as a personal attack when somebody refuses a cup of tea.

    • Oh I know most English still love tea. It's, as you said, the stereotype to assume they are still like the stuffy butler stereotype speaking the queen's English. Maybe still with the elderly generation, and even then it's only the more affluent. Elderly Cockneys still fit the Oliver! stereotype, sort of, with "fucking" added to every sentence. They've all picked up the younger more modern Brits' habits of cursing their asses off. Northern Brits, there's nothing old fashioned about them in any of their ages. Old fashioned Britannia is almost extinct.

I'm from the north :P we've never fit any English stereotype other than the tea. The south is like a completely different world xD

        • That's true. And I found the north to be very modernized.
