Brainwashed

From the day we are born we are brainwashed into thinking that every event in our lives will "work out" in the end. We are told to go to school, go to college, get a good job, get married, get a house, pop out a couple of kids and die. Every milestone must be achieved by a certain age. If you don't follow this "norm" somehow you are deficient. It's such a load of crap. I know that it's up to us as adults to decide whether or not to follow this but damn it's exhausting.

This post kind of reminds me of the people I know. They went to college for years to get a good job, but couldn't find a job that pays a lot after graduating despite all the effort they put in. They're in a LOT of debt and they can't afford to buy a house, so they live with their parents. They're raising their families on minimum wage salary since those are the only places that are taking them for some reason. People on the outside call them "deficient" or losers, but they tried their best. Some are still trying after all these years with no success. Some are losing hope and feel betrayed. It kind of makes me sad to see this happen to so many people.

    • Exactly. The crap dream is not the norm and yet we are brainwashed into thinking it is. I mean every other TV commercial is of a luxury car that goes with a luxury life that is unattainable. Why can't the media and everyone else tell truth from day one? That way we don't feel like losers because we didn't achieve it all.

Well that's not going to happen when the objective is to sell more and more stuff, is it?

        • I don't mind them selling everything. What I mind is them advertising their products to all of us from the moment we wake to the moment we sleep. We end up yearning for things that are so unattainable and that makes us mentally unhinged.

You should move to an eastern European country. They don't bullshit each other there. From a young age they are taught to expect life to be harsh, and they usually aren't disappointed.

Maybe it makes the triumphs in life more savory. I wouldn't know, my life is a fucking joke.

  • It is all a load of horseshit. Life ain't that simple. For example what if someone has a serious illness which prevents him/her from functioning?

    • That doesn't prevent the media from making that person feel like shit because he can't take a Travelocity holiday to Belize. Or buy a $50 meal at Chili's. Or...

It's less exhausting if you get the right degree, marry a wonderful partner, get a fun job, an affordable house, money for retirement, and relaxing vacations.

    Then, life is a breeze.

All what you've said in 100% true "my opinion". I think this way a lot of times. You should see a site called TED it's great and helps me relax :)

I'd agree that every culture has expectations of you. But not everything is "brainwashing". The desire to find love, spread your genes and life a comfortable life is just basic human instinct.
Therefor those things will always be the norm in most societies. But I'm willing to bet you live in a country where you can do whatever the hell you want with your life and that's something to be grateful for.

you must be young.... wait until your mid life crisis (or before it), then things will begin to fall in order. Life isn't that simple, so many suffer and only a few get to reap the rewards of your blood sweat and tears.

That's very true. I'm not naive, I didn't say life was that simple. But just because the people in power cater to our primal needs in order to control us doesen't mean they invented them. Nobody needed to brainwash us into being selfish and indifferent; We just are.
"Bread and games" has worked since ancient times.

But if you're lucky enough to live somewhere were you can speak your mind and disregard the social norm without getting inprisoned or killed you're still one of the freest people in the world. We aren't forced to follow the status quo but we choose to do so because it's easy. And this is, as I said, human nature.

Don't believe the hype, and don't buy into the overly romanticized magical thinking that the culture tries to push on all of us. Try not to compare yourself to others nor compete with them, but instead compare and compete with yourself so you can be the best you!

I know I certainly don't fit the mold for achieving that cookie cutter American dream. I'm a college dropout who was suspended for a semester due to bad grades, but ended up dropping out anyway to get married to someone who ended up cheating on me with a girl from his work. I'm grateful that I got to work in my field of study for a few years, but I was unfocused, and sacrificed my education to follow some stupid preconceived notion about needing to be a relationship a little over twenty years ago, because that's what society and some of my more stupid female friends thought (one in particular).

You sound like you've got a good head on your shoulders! If I were back in my old shoes, those 10 eyelet Doc Marten's, knowing what I know now I like to think I would have been smarter. When I was young I probably spent way too much time listening to friends when I should have been focusing on my studies, discovering my own morals and values and working toward my goals instead of daydreaming about bullshit.

Not brainwashed, but pressured. These goals are good for people who lack ambition for anything greater. Owning a house, getting married and moving up the corporate ladder will provide a large sense of self-worth.

The key is to not limit yourself. Why a wife and kids? Get attractive enough to have a harem of girls in their twenties. Getting a job? Work for yourself, start a company, own your labor, get rich.

You're intimidated by the pressures the media gives you? Hell, those pressures should pale in comparison to the pressures you push on yourself each day.

    • What delusional world do you live in? How many people no matter how hard they try get to achieve all that you mentioned? Not many.

I'm not talking to hopeless cases, like those who suffer great illnesses or disabilities. All that I mentioned requires energy, time and money. But money is a product of time and energy, so really just those two are all you need.

Problem is, most folks don't have a lot of time and energy, not if you're working 9-5 and have a family to care for. Those are choices you've made, and that's fine. Lots of people adapt their goals (or get rid of them entirely) when they no longer have the means to reach them. That's fine too.

My advice was geared towards young people with nothing but time and energy on their hands. I'm telling you to have big goals and pursue them, because in that pursuit you gain the discipline to make sacrifices and really, become a better person.

So keep the pressure on—it's how you get stronger.
