Boss said i can't wear a skirt

I work in an office with 5 women, my boss and 4 others. No customers or members of the public come in our office. We have had some really hot days lately so I went to work in some smart taylored shorts. I was sent home to change into long trousers and had my pay deducted for an hour whilst I was gone.

At lunch time I went to the local shopping centre and bought a skirt which I changed into for the afternoon. Once again I was sent to change. The women including my boss are all sat at their desks in nice cool short dresses or skirts but because I am male I must suffer and sweat in long trousers. I believe I am being discriminated against for my gender.

I do not usually wear skirts, but I believe I should be allowed to do so if I wish. Why is it not discrimination when I am told I can't?

I should be allowed to wear shorts instead of a skirt 11
I should be able to choose between trousers, shorts or a skirt. 13
Men should not wear skirts and that's that. 11
I should be allowed to wear a skirt if I want to. 13
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Everything was ok, until you said you were male...
Bro if you worked at my company and came to work in a skirt, I don't know if I should laugh at you, or fire you...

Do whatever you want and wear whatever you want in your private time, but in the office you wear smart office clothes for your gender! Male clothes for men. Female clothes for women. Simple as that. That's how I was taught by my dad. That's how things were at his business. This is how they are in my business and how they will be in the future when I have children and they take over.

Also who wears shorts in the office?! I'm the boss and even I wouldn't wear them at work.

Is there a defined dress code when you were hired for your job ? That could really make a difference.

    • The dress code says smart office attire.

You can always tell boss you are Scottish and start off wearing a kilt.

I'm too lazy for this so you can do it - Google "smart office attire" or something and find out what exactly that means. It could be that for men pants are required.

As for "I can wear whatever I want! Gender equality!"... Well.. I stay with those that are against dressing as the opposite gender. Yes, it doesn't really hurt anyone and if it makes you happy, it's kinda fine but you can do it at home. It's kinda like a culture thing. And genders are not actually equal. I am all for equal rights but not about breaking the border between genders

You could ask a lawyer if you have a case. But understand the majority of the world doesn't give a shit and you are lucky to have money and running water.

If it is a professional office environment, Shorts, even longer ones, can be deemed unprofessional on me. And yes, it's a doubly standard that women can wear skirts and you cannot. You should be able to wear skirts or dresses for that matter if you choose to do so. Good luck! I hope you get to wear skirts or dresses. They are much cooler than trousers.

Hmmm it's a tough one. It's your bosses business so whatever she chooses is what should go. If you're not seeing anyone though I don't see it as unreasonable to wear shorts to work, but I can understand her not wanting you to wear a skirt.

If you want to wear a skirt, fair enough. If you work somewhere where the staff have to look respectable then obviously a man in a skirt will look ridiculous and wont give a good image for the company. If you dont like it find another job.

Wear a kilt, and tell them it's part of your ethnic identity.

You should be able to wear what you want to wear! Tell your boss to suck it!

I'm a boss myself of an engineering company. I'm wearing shorts right now and sometimes a lot less than that. Not in front of customers though.

your access to genitals in the workplace should be equal to a woman's access to her genitals in the workplace. you are fighting for men's rights , all of us not just gay men.

Ladies like to see a little trouser bulge so the best thing to do is get a skirt short enough to give them an tease of whats underneath. The downside is the boss will probably give you lots of overtime!!

Don't know where you live, but this issue is sorta bubbling under here in the UK, since you're not the first guy to point out that corporate dress codes like this are discriminatory.

Sensible organisations which don't view their employees as little more than waged slaves relax their dress codes during extreme weather. Unfortunately, it sounds like you work for a bunch of dicks.

IF the weather is extreme. But if it's just a little bit hot then no. It's not really discriminatory, just culture thing. And I'd say, it depends what kind of shorts he wore. If the dress code tells to look well dressed then he can try to look for fancy shorts or something maybe. Nowadays such things do exist. I'm pretty sure that his co-workers are not dressed in just random shorts and skirts but rather the ones that are made for office style.
And idk how it's in UK but boss might have all the rights to choose what he/she wants to see in their office. For something like this I'd rather dress as she wants than get fired

If the weather is really that hot you can maybe argue for the right to wear shorts I think. Piont it out as a health violation and state its hurting your health.
