    Hi,

This happens to me often. It sometimes happens once a month, or one or twice a year at random. It varies from clear with a yellow tint to full on yellowish color with a foul odor. The best way to fix it is to first wash the area without irritating it too much with antibacterial soap. Don't stick your fingers in there, just splash water in there and rub over it with the palm of your hand. Then dry it out with a q-tip. Then use tincture of iodine; get a good amount on a clean q-tip and rub it inside your belly button all the way to the outside. It'll clear up within a couple of hours.

    You shouldn't have picked it.

Is your belly button pierced?,if so i had the same, maybe even worse,2 months after getting my navel piercing done and my piercer said that it was due to movement i used 1 tbsp of sea salt mixed with a full glass of warm water and used a qtip to clean the infected area-do that everyday,it takes about a month to disappear completely and return back to normal. So i suggest you try that eventhough it's not pierced-i think it's the best solution.Hope i helped.

I voted band aide but after conversing with my sister who has is in fact a Dr, she said out of the options listed, iodized salt would be the most effective.

Pour some Dettol in there and let it sit. You're obviously not cleaning it properly..
Or you're experiencing an alien pregnancy.

You need to do something about it, in case what happened to me happens to you!

My belly-button got infected somehow, and the only thing that was (possibly) related was that I'd sunburned my belly quite badly just before I noticed the problem. Started out red and itchy, soon turned painful and smelly. I was in Thailand at the time, so went to a pharmacy, where I was given generic antibiotics (which they give for pretty much anything) and told to keep in clean and dry, and not drink alcohol.

I took the pills and laid off the booze for a while, and it seemed to get a bit better. Then I went on a massive bender (long story) and it came back... But this time, much worse - red, inflamed, stinky and VERY painful. In fact, before long it had turned inside out - I now had an 'outy', except mine was red, with white bits, hurt like Hell and stank to high-heaven.

I went to a clinic, where the doctor told me I had an umbilical hernia and needed specialist treatment in a Bangkok hospital. I was on a mission to a remote island at the time, and I convinced him to give me a massive cocktail of antibiotics and painkillers instead, and promised not to drink or smoke or swim. This time I kept the promise (pain was that bad) and took the plethora of expensive pills.

Eventually, after many days of sober pain, and one episode where I tried to push it back in (BAD idea!) it began to recede. Eventually it returned to normal, leaving nothing but bad memories and less cash in my account. I still can't say for sure if it WAS an umbilical hernia or something else - but whatever it was, do NOT let it happen to you!

A bellybutton is technically a scar and since it's been healed for your entire life, it can't really get infected. Just leave it alone and don't touch it, and the redness will go away on its own.

  • Just get some antibacterial medical cream like Sudocrem or Germolene, Savlon or something like that. And leave it alone.
