Being given thousands for recording yourself playing games

As you may know, there is a trend of people recording themselves playing video games, and streaming that content. I have been a gamer for 16+ years but just learned about this a few months ago. What is interesting is that random strangers donate money to these streamers. These streamers aren't famous, some might be good looking chicks, other are your average gamers. And it isn't required to donate at all. Yet you have strangers donating to different channels.

For me coming across donations worth $50-$500 was a surprise in itself but I had the biggest shock today when I came across a handful of people who have gotten donations of $20,000! By a single person!

      But as you may guess it's not as simple as opening up a channel, recording yourself and getting lots of $$$. There is method and madness to it

    I am developing a YouTube channel at the moment. Basically I will buy the latest xbox and playstation games then do a review/walkthrough of the game. A lot of people do this on YT already but they don't edit the videos very well if at all.

    One YT show I have seen that is very popular and makes money is The Game Grumps, there a couple of nerds who play shitty steam games I can't understand the point of it at all and I think it sucks they make money....but at the same time I remember what Woody Allan said "50% of success is showing up".

    This has been going on for a while, pretty common if you play a lot of online games. I don't understand it, but I don't understand a lot of things people get paid for. I want to do it myself but alas, my computer and internet speeds aren't up to par.

      Do you mean competitive gaming? Cause that's at least understandable and not so weird. And it's still "earning"

        I guess. I don't see much difference though. Either way it's because people think it's worth money to watch other people play a game. They're just cutting out the middle man by doing it this way.
