Being attacked on here for giving opinion

So I'm sure everyone's aware this is a website for asking if something is normal, then people give their opinion if it is or not with examples etc.

But I have noticed a lot lately when I give my honest opinion to the OP, I either get attacked by them or by another user. I'm not a troll I use the website properly, but surely if someone asks for opinions they should accept them, and other users should respect other users feedback as well.

    You're not attacked *just* for giving your opinion; if you were attacked just for giving your opinion, everyone giving their opinion would be getting attacked too. You're confronted because of what your opinion is. That's a pretty important distinction, I think. Just because you're invited to give your opinion doesn't mean no-one should criticize you.

    Whether it's normal or not depends on the specifics; how you are attacked, and for what exactly.

      I agree with this. It could be the nature of your opinion OR it could just as easily be the manner in which you are expressing it. There are many different ways to say the same thing- some come across as more combative or condescending than others.

        Very true. There are plenty of people who think having a couple of tenable positions makes it okay to talk down to other people, and those people are assholes who prevent productive discussion.

    It's happened with me too. I don't get it. What do these people expect will happen if they post these subjects online? Why on earth would every single human being agree with them? If you don't get the ones that lash out at you, you get the ones that delete all of the comments that are opposite of their view. If they are going to be that immature, maybe, they shouldn't use the Internet.

      Exactly they never have a constructive debate either, they just attack and get personal.

        Sometimes, you can't fight fire with fire. Trying to explain things with these types of people often doesn't work, even if your advice came from a good place. I've made some pretty innocent and heartfelt comments in the past, and they've sometimes incited some very unexpected replies. O_o I remember once, I called out child abuse on a news story and stated that the parents needed to be jailed, the child taken into protective services. Someone replied to me and actually told me that I needed to be put into a mental hospital. @_@

        Sometimes, its best to put the fire out with water and don't reply back. Ignore them.

        I been noticing this a lot on poll especially. I think most people just come here now to feed their own egos not look or give any real feed back. I keep seeing polls with stupid stuff like "Do you like vampires or vampire hunters more" or "do you like cats of dogs more".

        When someone gives an answer the OP does not like such as "Well I don't hate dogs but I prefer cats" they get trolled and harassed by a bunch of people who demand they like dogs. I really do not understand the purpose of this website anymore.

        There is too many trolls here to even look for feed back and there is too much petty butthurt to try to give positive helpful feedback. So I do not see a point in anyone giving a shit what anyone on this website says anymore since any positive feed back will be drowned out by people that give good feed back and anyone looking for genuine feed back is going to have a hard time finding it.

    You're not alone, I've seen people on here get attacked because they disagree with cheating :O

    Didn't think anyboyd out there was actually FOR cheating or the people who do it, but hey, you learn something new everyday.

    I've also seen people defend chronic drug users, as if that's some kind of normal thing that people do. I assumed everybody was brought up being taught that drugs are bad, guess I was wrong.

    Either way, you are entitled to give your opinion, and if people don't like other peoples opinions, they shouldn't be using this goddamn site!

      Yeah but most people don't get that part. Most people assume everyone has the same likes, thoughts, opinion as them and when people don't they get upset and have to throw a fit over it. Opinion is not something people understand especially not on the internet or this website where people are so self centered they cant see past their own over-inflated egos. You don't like dogs? HOW DARE YOU! Everyone should like dogs because I do and if not you deserve to be told off for it.

    Don't get all defensive. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean you're being attacked. Engage the individual that you disagree with in debate.

    It happens on here but what your opinion is that makes people attack you, but then again I have been on here long enough to know, that especially lately, that most people do not have a justified reason for their "attackings", they are merely offended regardless of if what they are offended at is correct.

    So, it's not as simple as "you" having the problem (possibility but from what I see on this site now, not the only one), it could be that this place has developed their own unwritten rules of what is allowed to be said and what isn't...Cuz teh feelz.
