Being a sibling is overrated. iin?

Yes, while being a sibling can be a very special and life enriching thing, I find it very over-rated. Not everyone needs a sibling and many others are better if they were only children. That's how I feel, anyway.

I wish people would stop going on how "wonderful" it is to be a brother or sister. What may be good for someone may not be that good to another. It's all part of the bullshit that everyone needs their 2.5 kids (or in religious cases, large families of 4 children or more) along with the lie that Only Children are "Selfish, Lonely, and Maladjusted". It's a lie and it's harmful to both society and what family means as the term family isn't a one-definition thing.

Being a sib is fucking awesome; wouldn't give if up for the world.

Having said that, I don't believe in the "only children are horrible" malarkey.

I have friends who are only children and they are the most compassionate and helpful people. I think they also go way out to be extroverts to pull through this stigma against them. Some of the greatest historical figures were also only children. However I believe that it can be a lonely path for some only kids who do not have the right stimulation. I also don't believe that only children should be pitied upon because even though a person has siblings they each have their own path and some aren't even there for you when you need them.

It really depends on how the siblings get along. I see many siblings who hang out and seem to be best friends and others who are anything between apathy and outright hate. When I see the ones who hate each other and do mean things, Im glad Im an only child.
Being an only child, I never had any but you cant miss what you never had. I still like being alone a lot but I rarely get lonely. But some only children are (lonely).
    There s no absolute.

I wish I was closer to my brothers but I'm not. I think a lot of that has to do with them being a year apart and me being born 10 years later. I wish I grew up with siblings closer to my age. But as a civilian be thankful for not being a single child. ALL of them grow up to be spoiled brats! Although I know enough people with siblings that are spoiled too. Just be thankful to have a family.

I had the pleasure of experiencing both having siblings and being an only child (divorced parents, one remarried and had 3 more children). I've gotta say, my personality does much better as an only child. I'm mature, I'm educated, I've never caused any trouble (got in trouble maybe three times growing up), I'm friendly, I volunteer, blah blah blah and I'm certainly not spoiled, so let's just forget about the only child being a crappy person thing right now. Yeah, having siblings is nice I guess but for me.. I don't know. The noise gets to me, and constantly having people knock on my bedroom door while I'm trying to get things done is annoying. Also, I like just being by myself on my computer or reading a book. My parents were very adamant about "spending time with my siblings".. which just made me want to do it less. Besides, a very close friend can imitate the good parts of having a sibling.

Spoken by a sibling, no doubt. This is not something one can discuss with any more certainty that being born of the other sex.
Those with siblings have no more idea of what it would be like to be an only child than a male knows what life would be like as a female or vice versa.
    Conjecture, no more.
