Bats (the flying mammals) living/flying outside where you live.

I bought a house that had three shoebox size boxes attached to different exterior walls of the house. Turns out they are bat (the flying mammals) houses and bats live in two of them. One night I counted seven bats coming out of one of them! They fly all around the yard, feasting on flying bugs. And they never get near me when I'm hanging on the deck.

I know they're great mosquito eaters and have noticed I don't get many bugs on me at this place. But I also know they can carry diseases, like rabies, and their poop can be hazardous.

So, would you like having bats around your place?

Yes, I have bat houses near/on my house 5
Yes. I don't try to attract them but think they're cool and useful 4
I don't really like them around, but tolerate them 1
No way, bats carry disease and might bite someone 3
There are no bats where I live 6

I'm bats about bats. I'm for any creature that kill harmful insects. Insects outnumber us humans in the trillions. The fear of catching a disease from a bat are slim to none. Just don't purposely mess with them and you should have little to fear. Also bat guano is great for your soil. It's only dangerous in massive quantities. Which is true of any mammals feces. You know what furry little creature you should look out for, red squirrels. They are aggressive and do a lot of damage if they get into your walls. Little bastards.

I think bats are fascinating and my first tattoo many years ago was of two small bats on my upper chest.

They do carry some dangerous disease which was somehow passed to horses in Australia a few years back, I think up north somewhere, and a couple of people died, including a vet who'd been treating one of the horses.

At least the ones here in Australia wouldn't have rabies

My neighbor has bats in his attic. They fly around and eat the bugs in my garden (vegetables/fruits). They never bother anybody and the way the squeak makes me laugh.

Actually, the main food source of insectivorous bat species are moths, but they will consume other nocturnal flying insects as well.
Bats are beneficial to the local environment, and pose little potential harm to humans, with proper precautions being observed.
Whitenose syndrome has become a problem for some bat populations recently.
It is good to monitor that your bat population is healthy and numerous. If this changes suddenly, then you should share this observation with a local veterinarian and / or appropriate natural resources agency.

They're so cute, they live around my grandmas house and I feel kind of bad about this now but I always used to play with them by throwing little stones up in the air so they'd swoop at them thinking they're bugs..haha
