Bashing others for their stupidity

Why do people think it’s okay to make fun, bash or patronize someone for their lack of intelligence?

You can improve your intelligence level, sure. But there are limits. Some people are just not able to be smarter than they are, through no fault of their own. Their brain is just not capable of processing more.

It’s like making fun of someone’s big nose or bad skin condition. Why do people (mostly) manage to restrain themselves when it comes to criticize someone’s appearance, but as soon as someone lacks intelligence, people will just put all their strength and sarcastic skills into bashing this poor stupid person?

They're trying to boost their own ego 16
They have no patience 10
I've never seen a stupid person being bashed 1
other (please comment) 3

One reason is that if people of low intelligence have too much power it's a genuine danger to society. Communities that are poorly led die out. That means discriminating against less intelligent people is an adaptation which benefits humanity because it, on average, means power in society is reserved for the most intelligent. Obviously, just because it's an adapted behaviour doesn't mean it's the "right" thing to do, and there are plenty of intelligent people who appear unintelligent and suffer the same abuse (and, conversely, plenty of unintelligent people who can fake intelligence. Even more likely is that you're snuggly in the middle, like 99.9% of people :P).

The other things you suggest are true too, I'm sure. A lot of people have no patience for ignorant people because they can't empathise with their position, so they default to frustration rather than understanding. I'm no angel at avoiding doing this, but I try and keep it inside because all that comes from letting it all out is animosity.

It`s normal to lose patience with someone who has brains but acts stupid, but if a person can`t help being dumb, then it`s cruel to make fun of them or to be mean because they aren`t to blame if nature didn`t give them a decent brain.

I think in most cases people just enjoy being cruel and have bad self esteem. I think in some cases its annoyance. Some people do not listen when someone trys to explain things. Why people get annoyed when people re-post the same question 100 bloody times. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Oh, trust me, I get called a dumb blonde, and I feel so awkward to tell people that it honestly does upset me a little >.< it makes me feel so dumb and worthless, but meh, whatever. I just gotta smile and laugh it off I guess.

A persons intelligence quotient is basically fixed, so no.

Just because dumb people feel insecure or angry about that fact, doesn't make it any less of a fact.

Well, you kinda can if you maybe go to school (again), learn more stuff than you did, become good at it. That sort of stuff. Maybe not all of that, but even so, you can improve logically.

      • The test doesn't go on what info you know, it tests the way in which your brain will process things. The speed that you work things out, not the answers themselves.

With good concentration and learning you can exercise your mind and raise it slightly as I said. But no, a person has never in history had a real jump in IQ. It won't matter how much you try to learn as far as "IQ" goes. All people are not mentally equal, it's not like you can study and become as smart as anyone else in the world. You could go to school until you're 80 and you'll never have Bill Gates IQ. I did terribe in school, didn't want to learn, didn't care. But yet my IQ is higher than 80% of people who do try. Because it runs in my family.

        Blood is thicker than books.
