Rather than blaming thin air because whoever is responsible,made sure he would not get caught. So he overwritten the real memory with a made up tale about aliens. Which,seems to make perfect sense to him. This way, no investigations can be started to figure out what really happened to him, he does not even feel the need to shed light over it,because no matter what believing in something like that makes you feel like you are a part of this big thing and you are some sort of superhero choosen for whatever sort of divine purpose to carry out whatever insane mission. But really, it is just him, tripping away. And these people, making fun of him behind his back.
