Avoiding a friend in public you haven't seen in a while

Sometimes I see friends in public I haven't seen in a while. I don't feel like initiating a conversation but I feel it's rude if I don't say something. Unless they say hi first then I'll talk. I don't know why I get so anxious but sometimes I just want to avoid them.

    I know people like that. They say, "I saw so-and-so in the store and they didn't even speak to me", and I ask, "did you speak to them?" And they say that they hadn't, and I say, "well maybe they're at home right now saying the same thing about YOU!"
