Australians and new zealanders, tired of the anzac hype yet?

I'm an older Australian and I'm sick and tired of the endless hype about the Anzac Centenary. Why are so many people obsessed with dwelling on a brutal military defeat on the other side of the world in what was in fact an attempt to invade a country which wasn't threatening us at all?

Is it normal for me to be looking forward to it all dying down soon or am I in the minority about this?

It represents more than just Gallipoli. Sure the Gallipoli battle failed, but the way the ANZACs fought left behind them a legacy to remember. God rest those souls that fought in the first world war so that we could have freedom today.

If there is a god (which I don't believe) it'd be better if h/she/it hadn't allowed the war in the first place. What is the legacy? That young men get sent by old men to kill and die for precisely nothing? And that people like you think that's commendable?

Explain to me how attempting to invade Turkey 100 years ago has anything at all to do with our freedom today? WWI was nothing to do with fighting for freedom, it was a European trade war

Those young men died so you can have your opinion.

Do you know anything at all about WWI? It had nothing to do with the freedom of Australians or New Zealanders, except the freedom of old men to send young ones overseas to kill and be killed.

Stop spewing out cliches and explain to me how you believe WWI affected my ability to express my opinion?

Do you even know anything about WW1?

By the sound of things I hardly doubt it.

My last post was a reply to Redcoats, I don't know why IIN listed it as a reply to green boogers

Anzac day is the best way to remind Australia that being overly militaristic like the US is a waste of money and lives. How about a game of two up?

But that's not what we're mostly being reminded of: apart from a few dissident voices it's all about mateship and glorious sacrifice (now there's an oxymoron for you) and rubbish about WWI being about a fight for freedom.

Thanks for the invitation but like most Australians I know nothing about two up

I formulated this as my personal opinion after attending an ANZAC ceremony at dawn at the war memorial in Canberra. I thought it was healthy to respect war casualties from long ago. In most countries, even 4 million casualties would be forgotten in a couple of years.

Respecting war casualties is one thing, including civilian casualties, but the current sentimental hysteria obscures the fact that the so-called "Anzac Legend" is based on Australasian troops invading Turkey for no good reason.

Your last sentence is total rubbish: what country wd forget 4 m casualties in a couple of years?

I'm still waiting for you to explain how WWI has anything to do with freedom then or now

Actually I do know quite a lot about WWI, enough to know it wasn't about anyone's freedom, it was about European trade
