At work, a customer told me i was chewing gum??!? iin?

At work, while behind a cash register, a male customer literally came up to me and said, "I'd like to pay now. Wait, oh dear, oh dear. You are chewing gum..." So I said "yes, yes, I am" and then his reply was, "How cold! Well, perhaps today wasn't as busy. If so, that would be proper I suppose. If not, my dear, my dear! Gum chewing at work?" *sigh* and then walked away.

IIN? Is it wrong of me to chew gum? I work at a hair salon and today I was the person behind the counter answering phones and charging the people.

  • Chewing gum is considered rude in a lot of cultures, especially if you can see the gum being chewed in the persons mouth (example: Brittney Spears). Some people who chew it look like a cow chewing its cud.

The customer you had is just as rude as he accused you of being by chastising you for it. What a jerk.

As long as your boss doesn't mind you chewing gum then its fine.

I chew gum at work all the time but I've never had anyone say anything like that to me. That's just bizarre. Did he even pay in the end?

there is nothing wrong with chewing gum at work at all. i would actually prefer more people at my work to chew gum because their breath is just gaglicious!! as long as you werent chewing it with your mouth open, then its fine. just ignore those prick customers.

Customers can be assholes. And yeah is normal when customers can be jerks. Don't let it get to you, if you did. I mean you can say something smart, and make him feel bad without you getting into trouble. Like "yeah, you notice and want a piece?"

No it I not normal. People often find it rude in the workplace. When dealing with customers such as a retail job or a serving job it's a big no no.

He was rude but it actually isn't considered "proper" or professional to chew gum at work.

    WTF?

  • I guess I never found gum to be unprofessional. My boss eats her lunch in front of the customers..at least I go in the back. My boss is only 39 so I guess it makes sense, haha.

I agree with randomjelly on this one. He didn't have to react like that, but I'm a little surprised your boss never told you not to chew gum.
