I know it's rare in our culture, but some families still care for aging parents.

Well, here in the states it is generally assumed that once you're about 25-30 you are able to get your own place or something of that nature and you no longer had to rely on your parents for shelter unless you were experiencing an extentuating circumstance such as divorce or natural disaster, etc.

However, in recent years, people have been getting laid off like crazy and college students are coming out of school unable to find a job so there really is no other place to go BUT back to their parents' house. So I'd say that it's pretty normal at any age considering that our economy has turned to crap and it is more difficult to make your own way anymore.

What about the parents that throw out their kids at 18?

In the states, most people move out in their 20's. However, many people nowadays find themselves living at home longer or moving back in due to economic issues.

Now it's probably over 30. Most people can't afford to move out because jobs are so scarce and/or not paying enough. Rent where I am is 2000 a month which equates to 24000 a year. That's just rent/water/electricity, so you still have gas, food and pleasure. I know many 20 and even 30 somethings who still don't get paid enough to move out of their parents house. It's a horrible feeling but if you can't afford it; there's not much you can do about it.

It depends. My boyfriend is 24 and lives at home with his parents because he is doing a marketing apprenticeship which pays less than minimum wage while he completes it. I'm fully supportive of this, but I'd expect him to move out as soon as he's finished and gets a normal salary.

I moved out when i was 20 and had finished school. Personally i think you should be out of your parents house by 25, at that age you should be able to provide for your self. Where i live the most common age when "kids" are moving out is 18-22 . But on the other hand the economic is not as bad here as it is in other countrys.

i think by the time you're in your late 20s you should have yourself sorted out, before that you might still be in uni and have money problems but once you get a job you should be able to look after yourself without your parents
