Aren't old painted portraits technically selfies from the 18th century?
It just struck me that selfies aren't actually a modern phenomenon at all. Long before the camera was invented, artists regularly painted themselves.

Selfie you are taking the image of yourself with a camera.
Portrait: Another person is drawing you.
It's not a selfie if someone takes your picture thus it's not a selfie to have your face painted.
I lowkey want an old fashioned portrait with me wearing a tshirt with a chuhi in one hand and a smartphone in the other. Get the class of a portrait during the 21st century.
They also likely modified the painting to show how they wanted to look. Not how they actually looked at the moment.
So these were the equivalent of "photo-shopped" selfies.
