  • I got good grades, have an IQ just below the "gifted" range (118), and a large general knowledge.

But it counts for nothing when you struggle to function in harmony with other people.

I've had impulse control issues since i was a small child, it's easy for me to make friends but hard to keep them, easy to get a job but hard to keep it. I'm not allowed to drink or own guns and can't deal with boredom the way a normal person can, my odd sense of humor also angers people. So i'm somewhat socially challenged instead of intellectually, just as debilitating though.

Here's an example of why I think IQ's don't mean shit. Mine was 135 in high school and 129 about 7 years ago but I wouldn't call myself a very smart person. I cant retain information and I have trouble relaying it properly without mixing things up. Who knows how much more mine has dropped but I'd say without hesitation that your much smarter. So IQ is useless. Uselessssss. There's my lame opinion.

      • Not to bag you out but statistically it's extremely unlikely for you to have an IQ of 135, five points off genius level, i'd say you were not tested correctly. There would probably be two maybe three people on this site with an IQ as high as mine (118), and even that's pushing it.

But yes it doesn't mean you know anything, just that you process information efficiently. Not useless at all, but not what most think it is, there are also links between high IQ and impulsiveness, irrationality, lack of empathy, and in some cases insanity.

And as for it changing, a person might score slightly higher or lower at times, but not by much. High IQ's are something you are born with, often directly genetic (both my parents were 120).

An interesting theory is that isolation from a young age can sometimes garner high intelligence. Ed kemper was a good example of all my points, a scary example, but a good one.

Yerp, IQ doesn't change much, it isn't so much what you know but your processing skills in general.

Now if you received brain damage or exposed yourself to heavy drug use, I can certainly see a lowered IQ as being a result of this.

But quite interesting isn't it, he's got a super high IQ, he's well spoken, in control, sense of humour, but boom!

I did lol at when he puts his old reading glasses on, these creepy little round things and goes "would you get in a car with this guy?"

Then he takes them off and puts his thick black bookworm glasses back on, grins and says "see, the state has made me much more credible...as a human being"

It's like a car crash, you can't look away.

It's certainly not 135 now, and it was done in my school by a counselor so there is a good chance it wasn't done correctly. Even I thought it was pretty damn high.
I know its not completely useless but some people take it too seriously.
I was a bit isolated as a kid and even now I am very impuslive about certain things, a bit irrational at times and with empathy, I have way too much for some things and none at all for others. I'm going to check out this ed kemper

It's good for some things but the things it's good for are only a small subset of things people need to be intelligent. It's also variable. I got an insane score when I was 18 and full of caffeine, twenty points above what I normally score, and thirty points above my lowest ever IQ score.

          ^This.

I got a score of 133, and I attribute it to my reading skills. Although my typing style does not reflect it, my reading comprehension and verbal skills have always ranked in 99th percentile for my age for any standardized test. I can read guud, but otherwise, I'm dumber than a box of rocks.

I agree. I don't remember a lot of the test, but for me, I'm really good at the visual things but I don't think that makes me intelligent. I don't know the word I would use for that. I can see a pile of pieces and know what its supposed to be and put it together without instructions. I know what a lot of big girl words mean but can't give a proper definition but I can use it in a sentance. I can not relay a series of numbers that was just told to me, especially backwards. I am curious what my score would be these days.

The spatial awareness questions (the pile of pieces ones) are my weak suit. It's something men are supposed to be stronger on than women but for me I'm just not. Anything to do with numbers, words or patterns, though and I'm in like Flynn.

There are some reasonably good IQ tests online. Although a lot of them are tricks. You do the test and then need to give your email address to get the result.

Certain things with numbers and patterns I'm good at. I have to visualise it in my mind but I can only hold it there for a few seconds and as soon as I start to verbalise it, it starts to fade away. Its really annoying! I tried an online test for the hell of it but didn't find out that score because I didn't give my email address. Bastards!

That's actually how it is in the US as well.
I'm not criticizing the mentally ill, however, most people that you will meet here either have Anxiety, Depressive, Hyperactivity, Concentration or other various mood disorders.

I don't think I've met more than a handful of people in the past two years that don't happen to have a mental disorder. I'm not claiming to be the most sane person of the bunch, but... I think you've gotten my drift.

Yup, same goes for my country (Belgium). And there are loads of other countries like that. Mental problems are getting overdiagnosed, and it puts a strain on mental healthcare.

For example, kids get diagnosed with ADHD for the slightest reasons. Therefore, psychotherapists have way more patients than they can handle, which prevents kids with severe ADHD from getting decent guidance. It's sad, really.

People today are really intolerant when someone deviates from the norm. Even if it's just a slight bit.

The sadder part is that in our country, the kids that need the most mental help are often the ones that can't afford the help, so it doesn't help that the ones who need less get more and vice versa.

Just to be clear, I looked up the definition of intellectual and Wikipedia has one of the worst definitions I've ever seen on that miserable site. It made me question my own definition (which is the same definition as the people who have answered so far).

Working where I do, I have free access to the Oxford English Dictionary. I don't mean the one you can buy in a bookshop. I mean the one where the definition of a single word is a thesis in itself. Intellectual has *many* meanings but I'm choosing to go with the meaning I think you intended.

    --

No, I'm not intellectually challenged. I really do know a little bit about most things (and that naturally includes subjects that interest the intelligentsia). I get comments that my "little bit" of knowledge is often classed by others as a lot, but the more you look into a subject, the more you realise what a small percentage of it you actually know. That I know a little bit about Smetana doesn't mean I've learned it because I already knew everything about more renowned figures in opera like Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, Wagner and Verdi.

P.S. While I was looking "intellectual" up, I looked at the timeline because I thought it may be a modern word. It's not. It's been in continuous use for over 2000 years without really changing its spelling much. Kind of wow!

IQ tests measure just one thing - how good you are are doing IQ tests. Basically, they are (in the words of SayCheese) bullcrap.

Anyone who thinks they know their IQ score (which will change significantly and dramatically depending on factors too numerous to list) and goes around bragging about it automatically loses 20 points (that makes yours 98, tommythecat).

Personally, I award myself an A in Brains, but only a C in Applied Brains.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • Corleone

True. Especially since a lot of people measure their IQ through internet tests.

Even professional tests are bound to vary, since you'll score lower if you're taking them while you're depressed, in love or sleepy. People who want to get into mensa usually take their tests in the morning, since that heightens your IQ by a couple of points.

I don't think it's possible to get an accurate overall measurement of your intelligence. Using a number to define your an intelligence is an insult to what the human brain is capable of. For example, an IQ test doesn't measure social skills or emotional intelligence, even though those are extremely valuable.

What I hate most is how some people think their IQ gives them authority. If you get overconfident about your intelligence, you're bound to make more mistakes than a 'normal' person would. And that's what happens to a great deal people who find out they have a high IQ. I have to admit that I made that mistake as well, though I try to be careful.

    Yes.
I really wish that I had a greater appreciation for art and literature but I feel that some of it either seems incredibly pretentious or it bores me and I'm too lazy to find stuff that would interest me. I also need to broaden by horizons, scientifically. Math is a weak subject of mine and when I see it, I get very anxious. My Dad would give me pages of Math homework to do when I was little and beat me or not feed me if I make mistakes. My literal fear of Math is conditioned.

I attribute much of my intellectual weakness to laziness and apathy.

      This.

Although, I'm mostly intellectually challenged when it comes to literature. Which is ironic considering that I'm open to reading classic lit and I consider myself a casual reader. Weirdly enough, taking two art history classes has made me appreciate art a bit more (except for modern art- I still despise it with every ounce of my being), but in all of my english and lit classes, I didn't "appreciate" the novels we read like I probably should have.

As for math, math just needs to die. If there was a list of the most evilest things in the world, math would be right at the top.

I'm ignorant of art of general.

I can look at the piece, appreciate it and understand what it means but art is more than that. Often times, you have to understand the artist themselves and I am too lazy to put the time into it. And, to be honest, it is a little maddening to have to put all of that research into understanding the mind of an artist.

And reading classical literature is just... taxing to me. When I do it it feels like a chore, and then I feel guilty for not being refined enough to appreciate classical literature.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Saycheese

    I wouldn't necessarily say I'm intellectually challenged.

But it doesn't help having a mental disorder that causes my brain to process information slower. Which the disorder causes my hearing disorder which I can't block sound so I can't focus. Now if I'm in a quiet environment it is so much easier for me to process what people tell me and easier to read.

Also apparently I've gotten much better at learning than worse from things people have told me. I'm a lot more confident than I use to be which helps.

Also IQ tests I think are bullcrap. Due to my disorder I can't get a correct score. My IQ scores constantly change.

  • If you mean "Do you consider yourself below average intelligence?" I'd say yes. Part of the reason is because I let myself get behind in my school work.. and part of the reason for that is that when I was growing up, I was always told how 'gifted' I was. That's a load of crap. I grew up thinking I should be able to understand and remember everything the second I read it because I'm 'gifted'. When I found out I had to study like everyone else and that I wasn't special, I was crushed.

Yes, it's all my fault that I'm below average now and I've learned not to blame my parents, but when I have kids, I will never lead them to think that they're special. Everyone has to work for knowledge.. some just have to work a little less.
