I don't go to the Doctor often, but I don't really like how somethings like depression are considered mental disorders. If depression is a chemical imbalance, then we might as well make all other emotions mental disorders. But as far as I know I don't have a mental disorder.

    • Depression as an emotion is not a mental disorder.
However Chronic or Recurrent depression is because it is no longer a normal emotion when its experenced all the time.

That's the problem I have with the idea of depression being a mental disorder, people feel happy, depressed and a wide range of emotions. I know people who are literally always in a good mood, do they suffer from chronic happiness? Sure they feel sad sometimes, but they always look on the bright side. I really don't mean to sound like a jerk but people have a choice on how actions effect them. If you failed your math test, that sucks and you have every right to be upset, but you can use that sadness as an incentive to try harder next time, instead of just wallowing in misery. Do you get what I'm saying?

        • I agree that there are people who use depression as an excuse not to do stuff anyways. Also being happy all the time isnt a disorder because its not disabling to be happy. Someone who has clinical depression becomes dysfunctional because they no longer feel any reward from anything and nothing makes them happy. It becomes disabling because they no longer have any reason to be motivated and just dont care anymore. Anyways true clinical depression is probablly overdiagnosed.

Maybe it's just the way I raised; actually I'm sure it is, but I believe that you chose how to feel when results occur from certain acts, whether they were in your control or not. Depression isn't something that just appears, you have to let it. In essence you chose whether you want to look on the bright side or stare at ground blaming life/society for being cruel.

            • I have depression. I could be fine one moment, cheery and confident, then a couple hours later I feel my mood plummet. It wasn't something I could control, it just happened. Like a sneeze or a cough.

My shrink says I'm a manic obsessive with sociopathic tendencies. I'm pretty sure I'm kind of a sadist too. I cause people pain just to watch them squirm when they piss me off. Or... Maybe that's just today.

  • I have no diagnosis however I am most certainly a "nutcase" and proud of it. I used to get depressed a lot which bothered me. Also, for years I thought aliens would abduct me out of my room and when I go to sleep I hear stuff in my head a lot. On top of that, I have these lunatic outbursts of screaming and yelling and I have been obsessed with taking massive quantitites of hallucinogenic drugs for a very long time. Oh, and I completely function in the world fine and am doing very well in school. I think that most people are nuts but hide it from the public eye

So I would fall under developmental disorder and psychotic disorder.
I didnt vote because I dont know which ones more prevalent. They equally cause me problems.

I have currently been through severe panic attack rushes :/ including anxiety (though I didn't go any where to get diagnosed). I think it may have been a cause of this protein powder I was taking to build muscle strength. The brand was 99% protein and all natural, so I don't know why that triggered it off. Because of that I stopped taking it!
