Are you a vegetarian? for what reason?

I've always wanted to be a vegetarian, after learning about slavery; people thought that they were "naturally" above other people because of the color of their skin. Humans think that we're naturally above animals, which could be seen as wrong.

But at the same time, it's strange to compare eating meat to slavery; humans have been eating meat since before they were really even humans. Slavery isn't like that.

I'm still not a vegetarian since meat is such a big part of my diet, and a part of some religious ceremonies. What about you?

Yes, I don't like the taste of meat. 6

Natural to eat meat, not exactly fond of the way they treat the animals though. Animals get killed and eaten in the wild all the time, but they get to roam about and live their natural lives until then. I try not to eat as much meat as I use to. I would prefer to be able to buy it from a farm I know is reputable.

Here's an odd take to eating vegetables that many people don't think about....

Vegetable harvesting is not cruelty-free. When you buy your veggies in the market you see a bag of veggies, often already cleaned for you.

What you don't see... The harvesting equipment kills animals. Rabbits, mice, whatever else is living in the fields gets killed by the equipment. Especially if they burrowed their little dens under the fields.

So if you're eating machine-harvested vegetables to be "cruelty free"... remember, just because you don't see a dead mouse or rabbit next to that vegetable does not mean it wasn't killed.

I call this "wearing blinders". It's the mentality of "if i don't see it, it didn't happen" that people use. Same reason why many people who scream about how "meat is murder" turn around and use products that dead cow parts went into. Your tooth paste for example doesn't look like a cow so... it's easier to pretend the cow's glycerine wasn't really used for it, even though the cow still died.

I sponsor vegetarians. If you would like to be sponsored by me, or one of my carnivorous friends, please let me know!

It works like this: You choose me as your sponsor, and for every animal you don't eat, I will eat three.

When we die, we become the grass. The antelope eat the grass....

Haha in all seriousness though, the way I see it is its just part of the life cycle.

I don't think whether or not eating meat is natural is a valid reason to do it. You could argue that rape is natural, as amoung humans many years ago it was probably the normal way to conceive a child, not to mention the fact that many animals do it. Does that mean that rape is okay too, so long as it isn't too violent? I don't think so. It's also natural to burn down your neighbour's house, steal their wife, kill their kids and take all their possessions. In the "wild", that is what humans would do. Does that mean it's morally right? Of course not.

Would society have progressed this far if we'd always followed all our natural insticts? I would say no. Co-operation goes against our natural insticts, but I would say it is key to our success as a species. Natural doesn't equal good, moral and justified.

I'll probably get thumbsed-down for using such extreme analogies, but what the heck.

It's natural because it's vital to nutrition. OK, now we have extensive knowledge regarding nutrition, but even just decades ago, that info wasn't all there. If everyone became a veggie today, it would take eons for the human body to adapt.....and not only that, people would be dying right and left due to ignorance, unavailability of veggie food (climate, cost, shipping (and keeping things fresh and usable) etc), etc. It's just NOT natural and not feasible.

And what about the FACT that wild animals need to be culled at certain rates to avoid overpopulation? Are you aware that deer, elk, moose, bear, etc are culled by non-hunters, and hunters alike, and the carcasses go to charity to feed the hungry? Bet ya don't.

Most free veggies-a)don't provide full nutrition and b0are typically only given out by grocery stores because they are past their shelf life and can't be legally sold.

Our teeth prove we are carnivores.

How would it work to turn everyone into veggies? I seriously want to know.

When did my comment say I wanted everybody to be veggie? Sure, in my opinion that WOULD be the ideal, but I know it is unfeasible and there's no point trying to achieve it. In the Western world I think as many people as possible SHOULD become vegetarians because it is possible to do so using meat substitutes without sacrificing nutrition, so that argument is defunct. Gone are the days when vegetarian = exclusive vegetable-eater. In much poorer counties, I accept that it is impractical for most people to become vegetarians.

I don't accept that all animal culls are necessary. I'd go as far as to say that most are not necessary, and only go ahead to increase human convenience. Again, I can only speak for how culling works in my country, I have no idea how it works in the United States. I also doubt that in most cases the meat is donated to charity, but if so, good for them! I don't want to force people to become vegetarians if it would mean they starved to death! I'm not THAT crazy!

I've just debunked the argument that because it is natural to eat meat it is also morally justifiable... what is your point saying it is natural? Why does natural = morally justified?

As I said above, I don't think it is possible for the whole world to be vegetarians, and it would be impractical and counter-productive to the cause to force them to be so.

Sorry, but animal culls are absolutely necessary. Do the research. You probably live in an urban area, I live in a rural area, and it's definitely necessary, definitely.

And you are ABSOLUTELY wrong that a great amount of meat is donated to charity. A HUGE amount. Look it up. (some) People hunt for sport only and don't want the meat. People who hit a deer, elk, moose, bear...whatever...in their car, the meat is picked up for charity. Accidental or self-defense shootings of animals are also donated, as it's illegal to keep the meat. Please, look it up.

Sorry about the typo in my first response, I have no clue how that happened...prob a cut and paste error. Anyway...

Not all of them are. I'll admit some are, but not all. And I live in a rural area.

If that is the case, maybe I am wrong, but it doesn't change my central point.

Haha, doesn't matter! I'm not gonna troll you are a spelling error... I didn't even spot it! :P

The main reasons for animal culling is overpopulation (animal, not human!!) and nuisance. It's necessary so that the animals don't starve to death or cause trouble by attacking, or invading, people's property looking for food. They also cause a lot of accidents on the roads.

We're at the top of the food chain...or food web if you will. Do you think a lion or a hyena go around thinking they're better than the animals they eat? No. They're hungry. Humans have canines for a reason.

I believe that with time people will evolve and not eat meat or animal products anymore. It will happen step by step, little by little....and I've decited to take part in this evolution right now.

I'm kind of very late to this but I'll comment anyway.

I'm not actually vegetarian but I have considered it for a reason not mentioned here.

It makes sense if we want to grow as a species. What I mean is that plants only take in about 2% of sunlight's usable energy. After that, the next consumer uses about 20% of the energy in the plant, followed by 20% of that for the next consumer.

So, if we want to be able to sustain a large population, it makes much more sense to forgo the meat and settle for another source of protein.

I just don't wish to eat animals.

It's small minded to say 'oh animals eat other animals, and humans are animals' unlike other animals we cant chew through animal flesh naturally without cooking it. We also need to cook meat to not get sick from it. How is that natural?

You don't see a lion in a savanna with a BBQ cooking its prey.

I agree with your point but you're off on the reasoning there.

Humans can chew straight through most animals flesh as we have canine teeth. Also, according to some theories, the function of the appendix was to help in the processing of uncooked meat. Alas, we have lost that ability if we had it.

I'm not really a "vegetarian", but I rarely eat actual meat. I eat like chicken stock in soup broth, or other things like that. I don't like the taste of most actual meats, especially red meats. When I do eat meat, it is usually chicken or turkey. Meat just does not appeal to me the way some fresh fruit or a good salad does.

I love all animals but it is very natural to eat meat and to me i see it this way if something actually changed by some people being vegetarian i would consider it but untill that happens im just happy as can be eating meat and why not if i dont eat some it will just be a total waste...

I think you cannot compare humanities' meat eating habits with other animals', since we have the intellectual capacity and complex sociocultural environment that makes our individual ethical decisions significant.
Tigers or lions have neither supermarkets or a brain developed well enough to actually understand morality. They make their decisions based on instincts and basic needs, but when it comes to eating, human beings are different.
We do not need to eat meat to survive but we choose to because of other factors such as taste. This is why I think we do have a moral responsibility of what choice of diet we make.
Personally, I think that modern farming causes a lot of unnecessary suffering and that it is a hazard to both our health and our environment, I've seen enough farms from the inside to know what's going on in there.
    And that's why I am a vegan.

Anthropologists have this theory that in the early years, humans had the rule not to kill a family member. Later the circle grew larger and the rule changed to "don't kill anyone from your tribe", later- "don't kill anyone from your nationality" and today the rule is "Don't kill another human being". It's only natural that we come to the phase when we don't kill other mammals and even later not kill animals at all. That is the future of evolution. So forget the religious shit and be part of something bigger.

I eat meat and don't think I'll stop, but I've read things that say when we eat meat we become more animal like and when we cleanse ourselves and only eat organics that we think clearer and become more aware of things, I don't know if I believe it but when I had a stomack problem I couldn't eat meat so I would only eat rice and vegetables and id have to say I did have a clearer mind, not so sure about being aware of spirits or anything unordinary
