That's because you were too young to use a payphone when they were actually still around and cellphones weren't as common.
I happened to see one just lastnite that I had no idea was even there. Strange since it was in my nearest town of just a few hundred people. Then again, cell service is spotty at best here so maybe that's why.
Well, I haven't seen payphones disappear yet. Their all up and well in this neck of the wood.
I use the payphones all the time. It saves money from my cell phone ore sometimes there's no time on my phone. I will really miss them if they go.
Interesting question. When I moved into where I live now, a year ago, I'd forgotten the alarm code, and my mobile was discharged. I walked into the centre of the city before I found a payphone. Of the ten of them in the central square, only two worked. In five years time, they'll be gone.
I'll miss the British red phoneboxes when the last is gone but I haven't seen one in years anyway.
