Are people so opinionated?

I know this is supposed to be an open-minded site and all, but I noticed when some recent subjects are touched, there is a VAST controversy where people suddenly become defensive over an issue that really isn't a big deal.

For example, let's take "gay" for instance. Most people here I know think that being gay is not a choice, and is instead something one is born with. This issue used to be heated years ago, but lately people have become more accepting of gay people.

Now a new issue in the past few months I noticed arose that just astounds me at the reactions given on it that really makes me question if most of the people here on is it normal are really who they imply they are to be (open-minded, for instance).

One example I'll use for now is with bronies. Just in case you don't know what a brony is, let me explain it right here with the most commonly accepted definition:

Brony - a male/female fan/viewer of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic that remains outside of the target demographic the show originally intended for (kids and parents as opposed to young men and women).

When this issue gets touched on, I notice some people go into "Gay Hate" mode all of a sudden. Now suddenly, people lose their open-mindedness I saw earlier and start becoming strangely hostile ("Only faggots like a girls show, for instance"). Note this is just a minority here that are doing this, but it still bothers me when I see this kind of stupidity. This is just one example of people just outright attacking a new phenomenon (it really is something that needs to be discussed more in my opinion, I personally find it fascinating) with the utmost contradictory appeals.

It's like a TV show can literally make people want to have homosexual relations now with another man right? I thought only Twilight had the power do that...

Here's a quick story that lead me to start this Poll Question:

I recently had a conflict with a guy I know on Steam. He suddenly messaged me out of the blue with "are u a bronie?" I then asked him, "If it means I just watch FiM, then yes." I was instantly attacked with varying insults from "ARE U REALLY GAY?" to "THE FUCKS WRONG WITH YOU!" Me, remaining calm (and laughing in reality), asked him "What if I told you I'm female?" to which he replied "I'M SO SORRY!"

Even though this conversation I manipulated caused me to get a good laugh, I was disturbed that this generation still thinks some shows are restricted to a certain audience, and that being a man and watching a girly show or a show about cooking, for example, makes one gay. Haven't we gone over this? Just because I watch Man vs. Food, doesn't mean I'm fucking fat. I'm actually quite the opposite.

Note, I'm not trying to restrict this issue to just bronies or homosexuality, but to a VERY GENERAL level. For instance, the issue can even extend into things like religion. Some Christians state how the Bible should be read in schools, yet they obviously wouldn't want the Qua-ran to be read alongside it. They are obviously picking sides based on their belief system and that is clearly irrational. You can say I might be over-thinking the issue, but I think this is a MAJOR flaw with the human brain and it's thinking system. We restrict ourselves to one end and refuse to leave that closed-minded state. This is something I feel MUST be eradicated from existence if we are to advance further.

Teaching kids stuff like gender roles, down to which sex we should fuck... It's all been just bullshit propaganda to me that brainwashes our generation and limits our free speech in the long run.

It reminds me of the quote; "Children are just stone slabs just waiting for someone to scribble on."

In my sole opinion and conclusion, I could come up with a million words on how stupid and opinionated we actually are; I'm just wondering if anyone else here thinks the same.

Feel free to debate me in the comments below if you think differently.

You're going to have to clarify. The question in the title is "are people so opinionated" (which makes little sense to me), but the underlying question of the story eventually becomes "are opinions innate or taught", and finally the poll choices seem to be written for a question more like "do people hold contradictory opinions".

Disregarding the peculiar question in the title, the answer for the latter two questions cannot be black and white. Any discussion of the degree to which anything is 'nature or nurture' must necessarily come to the conclusion that it's both. It can't not be. We have predispositions to things, but are also affected by our surroundings. So in the context of your question about "teaching kids gender roles" - gender roles are innate to the extent that men and women tend to be physiologically different. Men tend to have higher testosterone levels, for example, and as such they are typically drawn to a particular set of interests. Women tend more easily develop lactation, and as such are generally better suited for caretaking. This is of course an arbitrary evolutionary perspective, seeing as modern life has allowed us to eschew these molds.

Gender roles are also learned to the extent that cultural norms are - pink, for example, is obviously not inherently feminine. In the early 1900s it was actually considered more suited for boys. The same can be said of clothing, mannerisms, and other interests. But obviously, both nature and nurture come into play.

As for your second question "do people hold contradictory opinions":

    Well, yes and no.

    • I see what you mean. I believe the reason why the question came out all weird and different in the end was due to the question's extreme length and general nature surrounding it. I probably spent an hour making this.

Again, I am sorry for it. This issue has really been unnerving on typing it down due to it's complex nature.

When anything is centered around opinions, things get sketchy. I'd far more trust a survey than a person's opinion any day.

        It's okay, I understand.

I don't know about that last part though. Surveys are just as much someone's opinion as a paragraph, except it's been reduced to bite-sizes snippets. It's still entirely subjective, but it's been completely condensed to a yes-or-no question or multiple choice. But I think both are beneficial in different ways.

Also, Pinkie Pie is best pony.

Over time I've noticed a lot of people have a "feel first, think later" mentality, it's not "do what you think" its more like "do what you feel" (or have been taught to feel). This type of mentality seems like it could make it extremely easy for such people to have such awkwardly scewed opinions. Then there's also the herd mentality as well.

Honestly, if the world was just more open-minded, tons of complete bullshit would be wiped away. Humanity is just filled with irony.

Also to those that whine about the length of the op, you should probably just give up the internet. You won't find much use in it if you don't want to read anything longer than a few sentences.

Well, I'd post more if I found more stuff here interesting or fun to post about. But I don't find much to say on these linear "IIN yes or no" questions, so I just stick with polls. They're a lot more open ended and give me room where I feel I can actually say something. But unfortunatly they don't pop up nearly as much as IIN questions, and I don't find many interesting either, so that leads to my posting being really sporadic.

Most people are not open minded. They are just as close minded as everyone else in the world. A lot of people are open minded if you are into what they are. Otherwise you should pack your bags and walk out the door since you wont be welcomed. I have also seen people who are not close minded on one end being attacked by people whos side they are on. Like someone will accuse someone of being religious when they are in fact atheist. For simply defending or not wanting to attack everyone who follows religion.

I agree with the TV show thing. I've never seen My Little Pony before, so I don't know why people attack others for watching it. But I don't think there's anything wrong with watching something targeted at someone else. How boring and ridiculous would life be if we only did what we are expected to do! I don't believe that people should only wear or listen or watch things that were specifically made for them, they should just do what makes them happy!

Exactly! If you were to look at my appearance, and my truck, one would probably assume I listen to country Music, and watch Nascar. suprise!, Pink Floyd, Metallica and Nickelback are my jams! (I like some old country though), and dont care for nascar, but drag Racing is awesome!

also, yes, i am a brony

    • The point I was trying to get to in this question was: Why do people "assume" things like this, and is this a sign of unintelligence?

I personally believe it to be a sign of stupidity, ignorance, and such. I also agree with you when you say life would be boring if we stuck to the same customs and fads. I was going to get to that in the question, but alas, I did not have enough room (4000 character limit).

There's proof of change in our very history. Gender colors were only really made up in the last century. Blue used to be a girl color surprisingly, and pink, a guy color.

It does make me wonder who are the bullshitters making this crap up, like what I can and cannot watch, what I can and cannot like, etc.

Well I think a lot of the time, people are just joking, like I assume you were doing when you said:

        • Not exactly joking; trolling. Joking is intentionally obvious to be harmless. Trolling is done to provoke reaction and I've seen it done before.

I honestly don't see any point in trolling bronies; sure you'll get a reaction, but it won't be "WAHHHHH FUCK U!" that's for sure. Bronies say it a lot nicer and in this kind of counter-trolling way it seems.

I really do not agree with the notion that someone is BORN gay. Unless you are trying to say that we have a sex drive straight out of the whom. Which I really doubt is the case. I think sexuality develops during puberty. I don't think you know from birth though. If this was truly the case no one would question their sexuality and a lot of people take awhile to figure it out.

Why do you assume strong opinions are bad???

Can you add a 'TL;DR' summary?

    Comment Hidden ( show )

    • Let me make it as short as I possibly can:

I noticed with recent conflicts, there tends to be people who contradict their original statements. Basically put, some people appear smart, and then all of a sudden act dumb.

Here's an example of what I mean by this sort of irony:

I was browsing L4DMaps earlier when I noticed a guy with an anime avatar who was clearly into anime uploads stopped by on a brony upload to complain about how bronies should have their own site. He outright got destroyed as you can imagine by the next few comments from other members.

The thing is, he contradicted himself HEAVILY. Anime uploads are even more common than brony uploads on this site. I could easily say to him that we should kick the weeaboos out then too, since they clearly upload stuff that most people won't use either.

Really, that's been my whole deal here with this question. The poll is asking if you agree with me. I want to alert people to these kind of contradictions and if they are a sign of unintelligence, something everybody does and doesn't realize it, etc.

I ask it because I think it's a serious issue that isn't discussed often and is responsible for a lot of problems caused in this world.

Everyone has something that they feel strongly about. It's just a shame people go hating on each other over pointless matters of personal preference like that.
