Are most men sexist?

First of all this isn’t some feminist crap. The general opinions of men around me seem to be that women are inferior. When men talk to me online (when they think I’m male) they almost always express the opinion that women have lower IQs and are incapable of individual thought. I’m aware of the biological differences between men and women and that men are on average bigger/stronger/faster but what I’m asking about is do most think women are not as smart as them or see us as being on the same level as children?

Yes, I’m a man 9
No, I’m a man 14
Yes, I’m a woman 7
No, I’m a woman 13
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Yes. But hear me out. Most guys aren't doing it consciously or mean any harm by it.

Here's some examples: assuming a 'higher ranking' person is male (like business owner, manager, doctor)...assuming a male is more competent than a female (not trusting female doctors, asking to speak to a man, etc)...woman fails at something or is bad at her job, she represents the entire gender while if a man does the same, he is an individual who has his own problems/shortcomings and is no reflection on the male gender...household chores being seen as women's work...in work settings, it's common for women to be expected to tidy, get coffee, plan parties etc...assuming a woman got a job for being female, not for merit...looking down on women who dare fart or burp or get dirty...the slut/stud double standard...teasing (or worse) of 'feminine' men...I could go on but you probably get the point.

Here's a little story I'll add on. My husband will get riled up with other drivers and will comment on them personally once we go past them. If it's a woman, he'll say 'oh, no wonder, it's a woman/bitch driver', that's it, no other reason besides woman driver...but if it's a man, the man gets other descriptors 'OLD man', 'meth head/tweaker' 'driving a piece of shit' etc...you see, men get excuses or are at least seen as individuals. I could also go on and on with more stories about my husband yet he doesn't think he's sexist. He's not a bad guy and wouldn't intentionally hurt anyone but clearly he is sexist and that's how many guys are...they just don't realize it.

Well I must not be most men. The only time I ask to see the owner is if I'm pissed off. In that moment I don't care what gender it is I'm talking to I just want something fixed.

I ask for a female doctor (currently I see a NP).

Women blame men for their whole gender all the time. And when a woman does something wrong you can bet they have a plethora of reasons why it's not really their fault. And if they have to they start crying.

I have been doing dishes since before I can remember. I did have a period where I had a dish washer(I miss it so much.) I have been cooking since I was seven. Doing my own laundry since I was eight. Women have complemented me on the cleanliness of my bathroom. In comparison I do not know a single women and only two men my age who can cook. I mean cook, not warm up some frozen packaged deal. Only a few who have washed dishes. Few know why there are different settings on a washing machine. And as for touching a toilet well let's just say there are some places I won't go.

The only time I would expect a women, or a man, to tidy, get coffee, plan parties etc. is if their my personal assistant or an intern. All interns send your info to...

I would prefer a world where women got their job on merit. But hey, if you don't hire women just for being female your not supporting gender equality.

I don't like it when men fart next to me, or belches excessively loud. So why should I like it when women do it? And dirty? Sometimes, women who get dirty are some of the most attractive women I know.

Just saying you sound a little sexist yourself.

I didn't say ALL men do ALL those things. I also didn't say I don't do or say sexist things (that's pretty much my point, is that you'd have a hard time finding anyone that has zero sexist ideas...but it's not always conscious, purposeful or meaning harm).

How long have you lived with a woman/been married? Most guys I know know how to do household things too, the problems usually arise because they don't pull their weight when WITH a woman.

"I would prefer a world where women got their job on merit. But hey, if you don't hire women just for being female your not supporting gender equality."

        Explain, with examples.

And here, I'll give you an example of something sexist that happened to both me and my husband. He had surgery on his shoulder a couple years ago. After he was allowed to take the brace off, he looked normal...a strong looking youngish man. So, we were at the store chevking out and of course I grab all the bags since he's not supposed to lift anything. The cashier scowled at him so hard and said something, I can't remember what but it was a snide remark. This similar situation happened several more times while he was still recovering. It made him feel like shit and it also made me feel like shit (like I'm not capable or supposed to do any heavy work because I'm female).

Have never been married and never will. The longest I have lived with a girlfriend was four years.

Explain? Have you not heard of affirmative action? diversity hires? diversity quotas?
Examples are out there but most companies keep personal information private, all those pesky laws. So actual names are hard to come by. But one example that springs to mind is the UrbanAMA CEO Vidya Narayanan. Mrs. Narayanan was a engineer with Google who left to start her own company. Having received job applications from numerous and often more qualified men than women, she decided to hire the less qualified women anyway in order to increase the number of women in her firm.

Please note, problems with this hiring practice only showed problems in the tech department.

She eventually had to fire all the women in that department. Before she fired them she even tried giving them raises to motivate them.

You obviously don't know what affirmative action is or much about civil rights acts concerning employment discrimination. You've formed a sexist opinion based on misinformation.

Did you even read what I posted? You asked for an example. I gave you one.

A woman hired more women, not based on their merits, but because they were women. Then she had to fire them because they did not perform. She wrote several articles about this herself. I suggest you read them.

And I'm fairly sure I know more about affirmative action, civil rights and employment discrimination then you.

Every time I prove something to you or the other feminists on this site using facts you just say "well you don't know." Why do I have to back everything up with facts and you just spout a few bumper sticker slogans. Why don't you back up what you support with some facts for once?

In places like Africa, Saudi Arabia and here in Asia where I live.. a lot of men are really sexist.. and most of that mentality stems from religion/culture and personality disorders..

    • Religion + personality disorder (like narcissism) is one of the worst combinations, especially for a person in authority.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of men who have the attitudes you describe. Almost always, this is because they're pathetically insecure about their own abilities and status, often for very good reasons. Denigrating women makes them feel bigger.

Do "most" men think like this? I very much want to believe that the majority of men don't, but I don't know.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • In the West, no. In the Middle East and perhaps much of Africa, yes.

Men and women are equal but different. Men do have members who have higher IQ's. But they also have more variation in IQ scores. This means women have more consistent IQ's which leads to higher average IQ's. But IQ test are antiquated and designed for children.

Men are better at abstract reasoning, like math and mental rotation. Women are better at social skills like language and interpersonal relations. But this does not hinder a person who is determined these things can be developed through practice and applied usage.

Also as a side note they have more expensive body language. Men can be hard to read.

It's common knowledge that men are far more superior than woman mentally and physically. Sexist is a term used by those who cannot handle the facts.

That one "yes, I'm a woman" was me, and I'm neither a woman nor someone who thinks most men are sexist (certainly not in The West anyway).

I just need to say. Here's a hard truth, people are mean on the internet. Get over it. If you don't like it move on, ignore it. Or, defend yourself, online, against the people who are being mean to you. Don't call the police, or all your friends for support. If you can't take what's on the internet, stay off of it.

When men say that women are inferior, they merely imply that women are generally different from men, and being different is the same as being inferior. On the other hand however, those same men would criticize a woman for acting, looking, or thinking like a man. It's a double edged sword and women can unfortunately never win.

The concept of inferiority is very ambiguous. You said specifally physically. Yes women are. But if you want to compare emotional strength then women are superior. As far as intelligence goes, one sex isn't smarter than the other necessarily, we both have different strengths. It's comparing apple's and oranges...It is ignorant to to say one is better than the other. Our unique powers combined give us captain planet power though.

But the simple answer is yes, men and women are both generally sexist, just like all races are generally racist to some extent.
